‘The Dark Tower’ Trailer Is Finally Here

Published

on

Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey face off in both a desolate desert and the crowded streets of New York City in the first trailer for The Dark Tower, based on the novel series by Stephen King.

The trailer begins with an adolescent boy from New York who is haunted by visions of a tower, a man in black, and the gunslinger. He is then transported to an alternate universe, where he comes face to face with the Gunslinger. The hero later tells him the tower protects both their worlds, and that an evil entity is out to destroy it.

Like the novels, The Dark Tower adaptation blends multiple genres, including horror, science fiction, and westerns, with the Gunslinger bordering between a knight and a cowboy.

“I do not aim with my hand. He who aims with their hand has forgotten the face of his father. I aim with my eyes. I do not shoot with my hands. I shoot with my mind. I do not kill with my gun. I kill with my heart,” Elba’s character says at the end of the trailer.

The first trailer also gained the approval of King. “The Dark Tower trailer is here. And it’s awesome,” he tweeted. The Master of Horror hasn’t always been enthusiastic about film adaptations of his work. To this he, he still holds a grudge against the late Stanley Kubrick for his 1980 movie version of The Shining.

Anyone familiar with the books can see that much of the 7 novels’ material is missing. However, King and the filmmakers have hinted at the movie being a continuation to the source material, rather than a direct adaptation.

The Dark Tower, which is slated for release of August 4, 2017, is only one of multiple upcoming King adaptions. It hits theaters on September 8th of this year. Deadline also recently announced a remake of Firestarter. No release date has been set though.
