Actor Daniel Radcliffe Claims Hollywood is Undeniably Racist

Published

Racism in Hollywood is an issue that doesn’t seem to go away. According to a recent interview on BBC, Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe admitted that racism in Hollywood is rife, despite the show business being highly progressive. Numerous efforts and measures have been taken to eradicate the issue. There are several actors who are given roles they don’t fit or played out of roles, due to issues to do with racism.

Comedian Chris Rock could not hold his silence anymore and decided to address the issue when he hosted the 2016 Oscars. Many viewers were not prepared and looked rather confused after Rock’s direct attack on racism in Hollywood. He fully explored the issue, starting with his opening speech, together with recorded segments and comments throughout the show. According to Rock, Hollywood racism is a different concept, to what people are used to. It is more of a sorority racism. However, he did admit that things are changing and the things are getting better for colored actors and actresses.

Many who have been affected the issue, expected Chris Rock to tackle the lack of ethnic diversity in Hollywood. This was due to the fact that there was no single minority who was nominated for four main acting categories, for the second year in a row. Such exclusion made famous Hollywood celebrities such as Spike Lee and Jada-Pinkett Smith to skip the 2016 Oscars. According to Rock, black actors should have equal opportunities as their white counterparts. Instead of attending the Oscars, Spike Lee chose to watch the Knicks game at Madison Square Garden.

Another actor Dustin Hoffman also addressed the issue of racism in Hollywood. According to Hoffman, the racial problem in America extends beyond the industry. Despite winning the Oscars  twice during his career, Hoffman also skipped the event and did not even watch the broadcast. The actor alluded to what Chris Rock said that it has been like that every year. However, people were too afraid to speak out, fearing that they might lose out on key roles. For racism to end in Hollywood, the oppressed groups must stand up and force change to happen.

SNL’s Leslie Jones also chipped in to contribute to this growing debate of racism when she filled in for the bear fighting Leonardo Dicaprio in The Revenant, while yelling “The are no black actresses in this movie!” According to its directors, the reason why there are no black actors in the film is because those who turned up for the auditions did not meet the required standards. They claimed it was not a matter of skin color or race. Chris Rock made a similar spoof using The Martian, and created a scene showing white NASA officials having an argument on whether it was worth it to spend $2500, referred to as ‘white dollars’, to rescue a black astronaut who had been stranded in Mars.

Racism in Hollywood is an issue that most people within the industry shy away from. Everybody is supposed to have a fair chance but there are very few Asians and African Americans, as compared to the Caucasians. Some people might argue that African Americans or Asians don’t pursue these jobs much compared to other races. However, most are aware that the industry is full of prejudice and would prefer to just avoid it than suffer disappointments.
