The Arrowverse has seen its fair share of new and exciting superheroes. With Supergirl‘s arrival in 2016, they managed to have their first female led superhero series on television. Fortunately, she won’t be alone for much longer with a brand new hero in town.

That’s An Order!

To no one’s surprise, Batwoman will arrive on The CW in her own television series. The network have issued a pilot order for the upcoming series.

The CW

There’s no word if the Batwoman series will be a part of the 2019-2020 TV season yet. However, fans can expect to see her as part of the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event. Last summer, rumors swirled of a potential show with Katherine Kane, but someone else is now behind Batwoman’s mask.

First Time For Everything

Batwoman made her live action debut on the recent Elseworlds crossover. Portrayed by Ruby Rose, the character didn’t have much time on screen as expected. Rose, who is best known for her work on Orange Is the New Black, was ecstatic to land the part.

“This is a childhood dream. This is something I would have died to have seen on TV when I was a young member of the LGBT community who never felt represented on tv and felt alone and different. Thank you everyone. Thank you god,” she said on Instagram.

A New And Improved Bat

Debuting in 1956, Batwoman was originally portrayed as a love interest for Batman. The character was killed off in 1976 because comic readers were confusing her for Batgirl. Batwoman was brought back in 2006 in a completely different fashion. This time, she was Bruce’s cousin and a lesbian.

The CW

DC Comics co-publisher Dan DiDio stated that Batgirl’s update was to make their comics feel more modern. “It was from conversations we’ve had for expanding the DC Universe, for looking at levels of diversity. We wanted to have a cast that is much more reflective of today’s society and even today’s fanbase,” he told Wizard Magazine.
