Creepy Clown Sightings Across America Have Boosted Sale of Halloween Masks

If you thought clowns belong to the Shakespearean Era, you might have to reconsider that. In recent times, there have been spooky clown sightings across the United States that have put police on high alert as schools try to contain the spread of a wave of hysteria among their students. Parents are apprehensive, with the White House being compelled to weigh in on the matter.

The very first clown sighting occurred in August in South Carolina. Residents saw a bizarre scene of strange men dressed as creepy clowns trying to woo young children into the woods. They were dumbstruck, so they immediately called the police to investigate the happening.

After that, there have been scores of clown sightings in more than twelve states of the US. In each incident, locals spot clowns or people garbed as clowns lurking outside premises or schools. There are incidents where the jesters are seen driving around in a van or prowling the neighborhoods.

A school in Ohio shut down because a woman claimed she had been attacked by a man garbed as a clown. In Pennsylvania, Penn State University students, poured out into the streets and woods to hunt for creepy clowns on Tuesday night after reports of creepy clown sightings in the area.

So far, about thirty people have fallen into the wrong hands of the law for clown-related crimes. Some of the crimes involved false reports of creepy clown sightings. Also, police arrested people and charged them with harassment and the making of terroristic threats.

The White House issued a presser on the phenomenon last week saying that the creepy clown sightings that have led to arrests of dozens of people shouldn’t be treated lightly and that the Dpt of Homeland Security along with the FBI had been consulted on the best way possible to handle the scare.

The incidents come a few weeks before Halloween. During Halloween, children across the US don costumes and go from house to house tricking or treating.

The sightings have resulted in a significant increase in the sale of clown masks for Halloween. Perhaps that is the only upside of this phenomenon. For example, Halloween Express, a costume chain, claims that the sale of its clown masks has increased significantly- it is up 300 percent over 2015. The National Retail Federation estimates that Halloween sales are poised to exceed $8.4 million, and shoppers are going to spend an average of $82.93 to buy Halloween merchandise- an increase from 2015’s $74.34. And, according to experts, clown masks will be the hottest merchandise on sale this year.
