Here’s Why Everyone Is Excited For ‘Crazy Rich Asians’

Every once in a while, a movie comes along that gets people extremely excited. Most of the time, it’s something obvious, like the next Marvel movie. But sometimes, a movie seems to just come from nowhere. This year, that movie is Crazy Rich Asians.

For The Love Of Money

What exactly is Crazy Rich Asians? It’s a story about finding the man of your dreams and discovering he’s secretly rich! Starring Fresh Off The Boat’s Constance Wu and 8tv Quickie’s Henry Golding, the film has everyone hooked after dropping its first trailer.

Warner Bros.

Premiering on The Ellen Show‘s YouTube channel, the trailer has gained nearly 1.5 million views so far. The majority of the comments on the video have been extremely positive. Commenter Kelvin Seet, who is from Singapore, is excited for the film to be based in his area. “It’s good that there’s a movie made here in my country, as with other movies like Hitman, that shows our country in a different manner,” he said.

Love And Marriage

Crazy Rich Asians, which releases on August 17, is based on the 2013 Kevin Kwan book of the same name. The novel gained positive press from publications such as The Independent and The New York Times. A year after its release, producer Nina Jacobson picked up the film rights. The movie is directed by Jon M. Chu, who has worked on G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Justin Bieber: Never Say Never.

Warner Bros.

The film also features Captain Marvel‘s Gemma Chan, Community‘s Ken Jeong, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon‘s Michelle Yeoh.

Diversity Is Key

Crazy Rich Asians is easily one of the most important films coming out in 2018. This is one of the few Hollywood films to have a predominantly Asian cast. With the negative reactions to movies like Ghost In The Shell and Death Note, people wanted a change.

Warner Bros.

“A lot of the roles I see that are good for Asians are often period pieces. While that’s great, I think it says something if we can only picture Asians in something from another time,” Wu told Entertainment Weekly.
