Conan The Barbarian Is Coming To The Small (Streaming) Screen

Published

on

If you grew up in the 1980s or watch an awful lot of old movies, then you’ll remember when Arnold Schwarzenegger took on the role of Conan The Barbarian for the big screen. He rocked the part, and while it has been rebooted both on the small screen and in theaters since, we’re still waiting for anything nearly as good as Arnold’s performance. This may be about to change, thanks to a new Conan the Barbarian show in development for Amazon Prime’s streaming service.

Robert E. Howard’s Classic Creation

Conan is a product of the imagination of the writer Robert E. Howard. Howard has contributed dozens of characters and stories to popular culture, but he’s best-known for Conan, the hero of his high-fantasy epic.

Interestingly enough, Howard passed away in 1934 without having published a single Conan novel or short-story collection. All of them were published posthumously.

Adaptation Challenges

It would be hard to call Conan anything other than a product of his time. It’s a tale of a muscular man who slaughters his way through hostile lands full of magic to steal things.

Oh and on the way, he becomes romantically entangled with a lot of women. A lot. Will audiences accept Conan the manly womanizer now? We imagine the answer is “no.”

Showrunners Feel Confident

Conan’s showrunners, Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik, feel confident that they can update the property for today’s audiences. Condal has worked on Rampage and Hercules, and Sapochnik has worked on Game of Thrones and the new Netflix series Altered Carbon.

Between them, they believe they have the chops to bring Conan to the small screen in a way that doesn’t upset fans and updates with the times. We can’t wait, and it would be wonderful to see a good adaption of Conan The Barbarian finally grace our screens sometime in 2019. There are no other details about the project at this time, but Amazon, which is paying for the project, is expecting a big hit from Conan. Fingers crossed.
