Claire Underwood Takes Control In A Post-Spacey ‘House Of Cards’

“Mr. Speaker, the president of the United States.” Those eight simple words will have new meaning when House of Cards returns to Netflix for its sixth season.

Where House Of Cards Left Off

Kevin Spacey has famously portrayed Frank Underwood for five seasons of the Netflix program House of Cards, which arguably put the streaming service’s original programming on the map. The Southern Democrat began the series as Majority Whip. Through murder, betrayal, and corruption, Frank has made it to the Oval Office and has been at risk of being exposed by reporters.

His wife Claire Underwood has served as more of a political partner than a spouse. Claire has ambitions of her own and it is not surprising Robin Wright will assume the lead role in House of Cards sans-Spacey. In case you’re a little behind, the last season ended after Claire left Frank behind and is positioning herself to become Commander and Chief.

Impeaching A Fake President

With the sudden resurgence within the #TimesUp and #MeToo movements, Hollywood has been ousting sexual predators. Studios are enforcing a zero-tolerance policy for many of the elite celebrities. Kevin Spacey has been accused of sexual misconduct on the set of the Netflix show. Its effect on season six has cost Netflix a Q4 loss of $39 million.

The studio halted production until it announced the show would go on without Spacey. Robin Wright will become the show’s only leading role, with perhaps an increased opportunity for Michael Kelly, who plays Doug Stamper.

An Opportunity To Shine

Stamper, who has been Frank’s most dedicated confidant, has one of the most interesting story arcs in the series. It would be a great chance to retain the quality storytelling which has existed thanks in part to Spacey’s incredibly strong leading performance.

It is unknown how showrunners will explain the sudden departure of Frank Underwood. Wright and Kelly will be joined by new additions Diane Lane and Greg Kinnear as season six returns this fall.
