Here’s What Chris Hemsworth Thinks About ‘Thor: The Dark World’

As an actor, you don’t really downplay a movie when you’re busy getting that paycheck. Years after its release, however,  true feelings might come out in various interviews. Chris Hemsworth has been having the time of his life portraying Thor. One movie, however, has led to a shocking response from the star.

Do The Evolution

As the sequel to 2011’s Thor, The Dark World finds the titular hero teaming up with his evil brother, Loki. At the time, Hemsworth was ecstatic about evolving the character a bit more. “Each time we get to break him down and find his human qualities and his vulnerable side it’s interesting because he has such a tough exterior and an unbreakable feel,” he told The Movie Network in 2014.

A Change Of Heart

A few years have gone since the release of the film, and Hemsworth is singing a different tune. In an interview with GQ Magazine, his feelings towards the film were pretty neutral. “The first one is good, the second one is meh. What masculinity was, the classic archetype— it just all starts to feel very familiar. I was so aware that we were right on the edge,” he said.

Seconding That Motion

Hemsworth’s feelings towards Thor: The Dark World was certainly mirrored in reviews. Los Angeles Times journalist Michael Phillips stated that the film was nothing more than “same old threats of galaxy annihilation spiced with fairly entertaining fish-out-of-water jokes.” When it comes to Hemsworth’s lines, The New York Times journalist Jeannette Catsoulis stated, “Whoever wrote this poor man’s lines should be immediately injected with a serious dose of Aether.”

An Accursed Response

Actor Christopher Eccleston, who is best known for his work on Doctor Who, also disliked the film. Talking to The Guardian, Eccleston, who played Malekith the Accursed, gave a no-holds-barred take on his experience. “Working on something like GI Joe was horrendous. I just wanted to cut my throat every day. And Thor? Just a gun in your mouth,” he said.

Let The Games Begin

The lukewarm response to the film caused Hemsworth to go a different route with Thor: Ragnarok. “There is so much exposure on that character and you just don’t want him to be predictable … but I think we want to get back to more of a sense of adventure and fun in the third Thor,” he told Toronto Sun. Fortunately, Thor: Ragnarok became a universally acclaimed film and stands as the best film in the Thor series.
