Chloe Sevigny’s ‘Lizzie’ Digs Deep Into Lizzie Borden’s Psyche

Biographical films about murder have been all the rage over the years. 2003’s Monster is one of the biggest ones yet with numerous accolades to its name. One new film delivers a murder story that’s the stuff of legends.

An Infamous Incident

Lizzie Borden once lived a normal life in Fall River, Massachusetts. Several arguments caused tensions to grow between her and her family. On August 4, 1892, her father and stepmother were both murdered in their home. Lizzie was accused of the entire ordeal and was sent to trial a year later. Fortunately, she was acquitted of these murders, but whether she actually did the crime is still a hot debate today.

The story was a subject to a handful of films, including The Legend of Lizzie Borden and Lizzie Borden Took an Ax.

A Long Time Coming

In 2018, the story of Lizzie Borden lives on with the film Lizzie. Chloë Sevigny, who is known for her work on Boys Don’t Cry and Big Love, portrays the titular character. For Sevigny, she’s been attached to Borden for eight years. HBO originally worked on a Borden miniseries with the actress, but it was dropped.

Being able to finally portray Borden has been a complete blessing for Sevigny. More importantly, she was able to captivate Borden’s true emotions. “So much has been said [about Borden]. But I think that we just really wanted to focus on how she went about finding [her freedom] and how important that was to her and what that meant to her,” she told Huffington Post.

A Flawless Vision

Joining Sevigny on the cast are Kristen Stewart, Jay Huguley, and Fiona Shaw. Director Craig William Macneill made sure that everything was on point.

One of the best scenes Sevigny shot was the murder scene. “I love the whole murder sequence and even the stiller shots, just seeing the ax in the bin. I think there’s some real beautiful work that [Craig] did, and dare I say elegant?”, she said. Lizzie is out in theaters right now.
