Charlize Theron Looking To Play Madame Web?

Charlize Theron has come a long way since turning heads in Monster. The South Africa native has continued to captivate audiences with a slew of awards to her name. Now, she’s looking to take a shot at portraying the Spider-Man character Madame Web.
Spin Your Own Web
Theron is in the running to play Web in Sony’s forthcoming Madame Web movie. The Marvel Comics character made her debut in an issue of The Amazing Spider-Man in 1980. In the comic books, Web has the powers of clairvoyance, telepathy, and prescience. Unfortunately, she’s been stricken with blindness and paralysis. Her chair, which is in the shape of a spider web, keeps her alive. Web is the grandmother of Charlotte Witter, who becomes the fourth Spider-Woman. The film is being directed by S.J. Clarkson, who directed episodes of Jessica Jones and The Defenders.
Theron has expressed interest in taking a Marvel role for a while. The actress spoke to folks at Marvel Studios, but nothing came from those initial discussions. “I would totally be open to it. That genre is becoming really fascinating to me and that kind of physical storytelling is something that I am really enjoying,” she told The Straits Times. Theron was rumored to be on the shortlist to portray Captain Marvel.
Theron has some competition for the Madame Web role, though. Amy Adams is also being considered to play the character. For comic book fans, Adams is best known as Lois Lane in the DC Extended Universe.
Theron Knows Action
Madame Web won’t be Theron’s first time diving into the action-adventure world. In 2005, Theron landed the title role in Æon Flux, which is based on the MTV animated series. Her next big action film came a decade later with Mad Max: Fury Road, which found her portraying Imperator Furiosa. Her performance in the film drew high praise from many moviegoers. Theron earned Best Actress wins at the Saturn Awards and MTV Movie Awards. Apparently a potential Imperator Furiosa spin-off is in the works too.
In 2017, she rocked the box office as MI6 field agent Lorraine Broughton in Atomic Blonde. With a budget of $30 million, the movie earned $100 million in theaters. Theron walked away with a CinEuphoria Award for Best Actress (Audience Award) for her role. A sequel is currently in development at Netflix. There’s also the possibility of Broughton running into John Wick in the future. Atomic Blonde director David Leitch stated all parties are interested in this massive crossover. Leitch made his directorial debut with the first film in the John Wick series. In the same year, Theron starred in The Fate of the Furious as Cipher.

Theron’s Making Plans
While waiting on who gets the part, Theron already has enough on her plate. Aside from the Atomic Blonde sequel, the actress has another project with Netflix. She will star in The Old Guard, which is based on the Image Comics book of the same name. In the film, she portrays a soldier named Andy, who is unable to die from wounds. This film will hit the streaming service on July 10. Theron’s next performance in the Fast and Furious franchise was delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic. In March, the film, which had a May 22, 2020 release date, was pushed back to April 2, 2021.
As a producer, Theron is enjoying what her company Denver and Delilah Productions has accomplished. Following The Old Guard, the company’s next project is The Addams Family 2, which arrives on October 22, 2021. She’ll also work on Two Eyes Staring, which is a remake of the 2010 Dutch horror film of the same name.
If Theron doesn’t get the part, at least she’ll be too busy working on cool projects to even notice.
