Celebrities With Commemorative Tattoos

What better way to celebrate an important career milestone or personal accomplishment than by permanently inking an honorary image onto your body? At least that’s what these celebs thought when they got their commemorative tattoos for their most iconic characters and other momentous moments. Maybe you’ll be inspired by their body art to go out and get some of your own.
1. The Original Avengers
Aside from watching one of what seems like a hundred different superhero movies featuring the cast of the Avengers, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, and Chris Hemsworth needed another way to commemorate their time together in tights. And thus, Johansson came up with the idea to get a group tattoo.

Instagram/@robertdowneyjr
Evans and Johansson got the Avengers logo tattooed to their arms by New York City based tattoo artist John Lord. Lord then flew to Los Angeles, where Downey Jr. and Renner got the same tattoo, before persuading Hemsworth to follow suit. Once an Avenger, always an Avenger.
2. The Stark Sisters
Playing the Stark sisters on Game of Thrones really bonded young starlets Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams. The twosome had initially thought they might get matching tattoos at the end of the series, should both their characters survive, but given the show’s mortality rate, they thought of something else instead.

Instagram/@kat_paine13
To honor the career launching experience of being a part of the global phenomenon that was Game of Thrones, the on-screen sisters had “07.08.09,” the date they were cast, tattooed in peach ink on their arms. Spoiler alert if you haven’t seen the finale, the sisters survived, so maybe some more matching tattoos will be debuting on their bodies soon.
3. The Misses of Mamma Mia!
Mamma mia, how could the younger gals of Mamma Mia! resist getting matching tattoos as a memento of their meeting on the set of the musical movie?! Amanda Seyfried, Ashley Lilley and Rachel McDowall didn’t just play a trio of best friends, they became actual best friends over the course of filming, and cemented their sisterhood with three identical tattoos.

Instagram/@mingey
Seyfried, Lilley and McDowall all have the word “minge” written in script on their feet in black ink. For the ladies the word is a made-up term of endearment, but across the pond in the UK, “minge” means something quite crass. Despite the mixed meaning, we’re all for a celebration of sisterhood.
4. The Cast of 13 Reasons Why
There’s been a fair amount of controversy around the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why, but if there’s one thing we support wholeheartedly it’s the important message executive producer Selena Gomez, and series stars Tommy Dorfman and Alisha Boe made with their matching semicolon tattoos.

Instagram/@tommy.dorfman
Gomez, Dorfman and Boe each had a small semicolon tattooed on the inside of their wrist to pay tribute to Project Semicolon, a non-profit organization working to raise awareness of mental health issues and suicide prevention. Transcending some simple body art, the tattoos have the power to do some serious social good. Way to go Gomez and co.!
5. The Ladies of Pretty Little Liars
Pretty Little Liars opened its first season with some very serious secrets and one big mystery — who was A? Well, by the time season seven came to a close, the ladies of Pretty Little Liars weren’t keeping hushed anymore, everything was revealed, and that included showing everyone their commemorative cast tattoos.

Instagram/@lucyhale
Series stars Shay Mitchell, Ashley Benson, Troian Bellisario, Lucy Hale, Janel Parrish and Sasha Pieterse revealed in an Instagram snap that after wrapping up filming on the finale they all got their character’s first initial tattooed to their fingers. Which finger you ask? Their infamous “shh” fingers from the series’ opening shot of course.
6. The Lads of The Lord of The Rings
One tattoo to rule them all, one tattoo to bind them. This is what we’d like to imagine the cast of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings film trilogy chanted as the whole group got their matching ink. Having been side-by-side through the thick of it, all nine of the films’ main stars went together to get their tattoos.

Instagram/@orlandobloom
Orlando Bloom, Elijah Wood, Dominic Monaghan, Billy Boyd, Viggo Mortensen, Ian McKellen, Sean Astin, and Sean Bean, and John Rhys-Davies’ stunt double (dutifully standing in for the actor one last time) all have “nine” written in J.R.R. Tolkein’s “Elvish Tengwar” script.
7. Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth
While plenty of people might balk at the idea of getting something permanently inked onto their body, Miley Cyrus isn’t afraid of committing herself to some body art, with anywhere between 20 and 40 tattoos to date. And speaking of commitment, the pop star committed to longtime love Liam Hemsworth both through marriage, and a fun little tattoo of a jar of Vegemite.

Instagram/@_dr_woo_
Unsure what Vegemite is? It’s a thick, concentrated yeast spread popular in Australia, the birthplace of her hubby. Hemsworth got a matching tattoo, because the couple that gets tattoos of pungent yeast-based condiments together, stays together. Or at least that’s the hope.
8. The “Skwad” from Suicide Squad
No squad goes harder than the cast of David Ayers 2016 film Suicide Squad. Not only did the cast all get matching “SKWAD” tattoos over the course of filming, but they didn’t call in a professional, they all tattooed each other — now that’s trust!

Twitter/@DavidAyerMovies
Margot Robbie, Cara Delevingne, Will Smith, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, Karen Fukuhara, and director David Ayers have all been spotted with their commemorative tattoo. Margot Robbie and Will Smith were at least two of the film’s stars that took turns wielding the needle on their fellow “SKWAD” members, and Robbie even admits that she accidentally, in all her excitement, misspelled the word on a cast assistant.
9. Besties Hailey Baldwin and Kendall Jenner
Remember when you were a kid and you and your best friend had broken heart best friend necklaces that slotted together like a little puzzle? Well supermodel best friends Hailey Baldwin and Kendall Jenner have got us all beat, with their broken heart best friend tattoos.

Snapchat/KendallJenner
Opting for colored ink Baldwin has a broken heart on the side of her finger in red ink, while Jenner went with white. Jenner has even gone on to design another tattoo for Baldwin, following a similar concept — “PR” on one finger and “AY” on another, and when she puts her hands together to pray, well you get the idea.
10. Demi Lovato
Sure, loads of people have tattoos dedicated to their moms, but how many people go as far back as to get a tattoo of their Mimaw? Demi Lovato dedicated a pretty sizeable portion of her forearm to a tattoo of her great grandmother, who she called Mimaw. Tattoo of her great grandmother Mimaw’s likeness.

Instagram/@ddlovato
Using an old photograph for reference, the image captured Mimaw at age 26 – exactly the age of Demi Lovato when she got the tattoo. Lovato turned to tattooist to the stars Dr. Woo, to bring her beloved late great-grandmother back in ink, thanking him for her “most meaningful tattoo.”
11. David Beckham
Whoa, we’re not even sure where to begin. Is there even any way to count how many tattoos David Beckham has at this point? With two full sleeves and tattoos scattering his torso too, Beckham is basically one large walking tribute to his family.

Instagram/@davidbeckham
Beckham has quite a whole slew of tattoos for his longtime love and wife of 20 years Victoria (Posh Spice to you kids of the ’90s), and tattoos for his kids, Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and Harper. The other great love of David’s life, soccer of course, is also honored with multiple tattoos as tribute to his time playing for Manchester United.
12. Tom Holland
He may not have been one of the original Avengers, but Tom Holland has his own Marvel superhero tribute tattoo of the Spider-Man symbol on the bottom of his foot. Holland has admitted that it actually hurt “a lot,” and the process of getting inked in such an unusual place wasn’t all that easy.

Youtube/BackToTheMovies
Holland had already decided that he wanted his Spidey homage to be on his sole, and moreover, he was dedicated. Good thing he was so sure, seeing as tattoos on the bottom of the foot fade quickly. That meant it took three trips to the tattoo parlor to get it done right.
13. Emilia “Mother of Dragons” Clarke
Despite her surprising character arc (don’t worry, no spoilers for season 8) Emilia Clarke couldn’t walk away from her time as Daenerys Targaryen on Game of Thrones without marking the career making role with a commemorative tattoo. And we bet you can guess from where she drew her inspiration…

Instagram/@emilia_clarke
Clarke’s character Daenerys had a lengthy list of titles, but she is perhaps most well known as the Mother of Dragons, having walked through fire and birthed three dragons (we’re not sure how the biology of that works either but we’re happy to suspend science). So it’s super fitting that her tattoo is of three small dragons across her wrist.
14. Johnny “Jack Sparrow” Depp
When will young lovers learn that couple tattoos are a risky move? Just ask Johnny Depp, who was so sure he and Winona Ryder would have a love to last, that he permanently inked his arm with “Winona Forever.” Only as we all know, the two broke up.

Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images
Depp changed his tattoo to say “Wino Forever,” because while relationships may come and go, wine is forever. Much like his love of wine, Depp’s pride in his portrayal as Captain Jack Sparrow from the Pirate of the Caribbean franchise is permanent too, featuring as a tattoo of a sparrow flying over the ocean on his forearm.
15. Jason Momoa
While a lot of Jason Momoa’s tattoos for his role as Aquaman were added by the art department for the film, did you know that a lot of that faux ink actually incorporated Momoa’s real tattoo? The Hawaii native has a tattoo on his arm as a tribute to his aumakua, or family god — a tradition from Hawaiian mythology.

Instagram/@prideofgypsies
Momoa’s family god/guardian is a shark, and so he has nine rows of triangles geometrically organized in rows around his arm to symbolize a shark’s teeth. The use of positive versus negative space is meant to further add meaning according to Momoa, to “take the darkness out and bring in the light.”
16. Bryan Cranston for Breaking Bad
While celebrating the series finale of the explosively successful drama Breaking Bad, star Bryan Cranston, who played the now iconic cancer stricken science teacher turned meth lab mastermind Walter White, wanted to do something to remember the show. As he himself admitted, he’s not a typical tattoo person, but in the moment, it felt like the right move.

Youtube/ITVNews
Cranston had one of the art department crew members, who was also, incidentally, a tattoo artist, permanently place the show’s symbol onto his finger. For Cranston, the tattoo would be a nice little piece of nostalgia — something to make him smile every time he glances down at his hand.
17. Ariana Grande
Not all of Ariana Grande’s tattoos were maybe the most thought-out decisions, at least her many matching tattoos with now ex-fiancé Pete Davidson might have been done a little hastily. And of course there was the incident with her “7 Rings” tattoo, written out in Japanese characters on her palm…or at least that’s what she’d hoped it said.

Instagram/@arianagrande
Turns out the characters actually spelled “small charcoal grill.” Oops. One tattoo she will no doubt be glad to have in the years to come however, is the small bumblebee behind her ear. The pop star got the tattoo of Manchester’s symbol, the bumblebee, to honor the victims of the concert bombing in 2017.
18. Megan Fox
If you’ve seen Megan Fox lately you might have noticed that the portrait of Marilyn Monroe that once adorned her forearm is missing – that’s because she had it removed after reflecting some more on Miss Monroe’s battles with mental health. Fox was concerned that Monroe’s likeness would invoke a negative energy into her life.

Kevin Mazur/WireImage/Getty Images
But that doesn’t mean that Fox is anti-tattoo as she’s still got quite a few pieces of body art, including the quote on her shoulder blade. Written in a Victorian font, the ink inscription reads, “We will all laugh at gilded butterflies.” The tattoo is a line from Shakepeare’s play “King Lear.”
19. Pete Davidson
The Saturday Night Live cast member is so inked up at this point, we’d be surprised if he has any real estate left on his body for future tattoos. While some of Pete Davidson’s tattoos are sentimental, sweetly honoring his late father, others, like the many, many tattoos he got during his brief engagement to Ariana Grande, were likely more on the impulsive side.

Bobby Bank/GC Images/Getty Images
One of the first tattoos Davidson got for Grande was the popstar’s “Dangerous Woman” bunny ears mask inked on his neck. Fittingly, it was also the first tattoo the comedian covered up. Now just a black heart, we can only assume Davidson will wait a while before getting a couples tattoo in the future.
20. John Legend and Chrissy Teigen
Pretty sure we can all unanimously agree that there is no chiller couple in Hollywood than John Legend and Chrissy Teigen. Seriously, could they be more relatable? And so, as always, Chrissy Teigen was any of us when she revealed on Instagram that she and John got matching tattoos — totally giddy over her new cool factor.

Instagram/@chrissyteigen
The longtime couple got each other’s name, followed by the names of their two children written in all lower case script in one continuous line on their arms. Their tattoos are simple and sweet. And as if John and Chrissy weren’t couple goals enough already!
21. Lady Gaga
We’re not trying to promote any conspiracy theories, but that being said, Lady Gaga’s latest tattoo, has a serendipitous second meaning. Gaga got four music notes on her arm, and if you read music, you’d know that the notes come out to “G-A-G-A” in treble clef. But what about in bass clef?

Instagram/@ladygaga
Well, it turns out that those same notes in bass clef come out to “B-C-B-C,” which some A Star Is Born fans have pointed out is the initials of Gaga’s costar and director, Bradley Cooper. Sure, it may be a coincidence, but we can’t help but root for these two to get together after seeing them be so sweet on-screen.
22. The Star of A Series of Unfortunate Events
So by now we assume most people know what a tramp stamp is, but have you heard of a scamp stamp? A scamp stamp is what Neil Patrick Harris termed his very first tattoo, which he had done in honor of his character Count Olaf, the flamboyant antagonist from the Netflix show A Series of Unfortunate Events.

Instagram/@nph
Upon receiving word that the series had been picked up by the streaming platform for another season, Harris marked the occasion with some celebratory ink. The tattoo actually matches the one his character Count Olaf is known for — the symbol of the Volunteer Fire Department within the show.
23. Jonah Hill
Beanie Feldstein’s debut on Broadway opposite the inimitable Bette Middler in HELLO, DOLLY! was marked with a commemorative tattoo…on her brother Jonah Hill. We can only assume he was vying for the top prize at the highly competitive (and completely made up by us) Brother of the Year Awards.

Instagram/@jonahhill
Copying the exact lettering of the Broadway revival’s marquee, Hill had “HELLO, BEANIE!” tattooed to his arm. Honestly this heartwarming display of sibling love is almost too cute to bear, but Beanie and Jonah just seem so earnest. Alright Beanie, so now it’s your turn to tattoo yourself for your brother, right?
24. Bella Hadid
With two small wings tattooed onto her right ankle, you might think model Bella Hadid was inspired by the Greek god Hermes’ winged sandals. But we have another guess as to the inspiration behind Hadid’s tattoos. After more than one attempt at being cast and not making the cut, Bella finally made her debut in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion show in 2016.

Instagram/@jonboytattoo
Victoria’s Secret famously calls their roster of models “Angels,” and for a young model, earning your wings is a huge deal. Hadid’s angel wings were first sighted in January 2017 — only a few weeks after hitting the career milestone. It’s not long now before Hadid is officially a VS Angel.
25. Rihanna
For Rihanna, tattoos are more than just body art. According to the sensation, “It’s an entire culture, and I study it.” Now that’s a tattoo devotee if ever we’ve heard of one. And while plenty of people get tattoos as tributes to loved ones, we really like that Rihanna got a tattoo as tribute to herself.

Instagram/@badgalriri
Across RiRi’s ankle is the year “1988,” the year she was born. The self-celebratory tattoo was done at the Bang Bang Tattoo Parlor in New York City, the site of at least 13 of her tattoos. And given how religiously she studies the “culture” we can only assume it’ll serve as the site for some future ink too.
