Can Fans Still Enjoy ‘Spider-Man 3’ Today?

Spider-Man 3

Released in 2007, Spider-Man 3 swung into box offices as the number one film in the country. With $890 million made, this is still the highest grossing Spider-Man movie ever. Despite its success, there were plenty of issues surrounding the making of this film.

We Are Venom

Following the first two Spider-Man films, fans everywhere wanted to see Peter Parker face Venom. Debuting in the comics in 1984, Venom has become a major thorn in Parker’s side. The character has been featured on countless lists for best Marvel villains ever. One person that wasn’t a fan was Spider-Man 3 director Sam Raimi. The studio forced Raimi to insert Venom into the final product.

“I had worked on the story with my brother Ivan, and primarily it was a story that featured the Sandman. It was really about Peter, Mary Jane, Harry, and that new character. But when we were done, Avi Arad, my partner and the former president of Marvel at the time, said to me, Sam, you’re so, you’re not paying attention to the fans enough. You need to think about them. You’ve made two movies now with your favorite villains, and now you’re about to make another one with your favorite villains. The fans love Venom, he is the fan favorite,” he told Empire Magazine. One main reason Venom was featured involved Sony’s proposed spinoff involving the character. Those original plans, which featured Gary Ross as director, were canned.

Lack Of Meaningful Screen Time

Actress Kirsten Dunst was vocal about her time on set while shooting. Her main concern was Mary Jane’s lack of involvement in the story. Instead of always needing help, Dunst wanted to join in the fight. In the comic books, Mary Jane becomes Spinneret, who uses Spider-Man’s abilities through special armor. Unfortunately, Raimi didn’t understand Dunst’s problem.

“At the beginning of this film, [MJ] has achieved success, a part on Broadway, and has agreed to work with Peter Parker in adjusting to his powers. But, still, she’s pretty much a damsel in distress. I didn’t want her to be so much in peril in the second movie, but no one went along with me on it. In this one, I get to throw one cinder block. Watch for that. That’s my action moment. Otherwise, I scream a lot,” she told The Virginian-Pilot.

All Of The Eggs In One Basket

What confused fans the most were the multiple plotlines found in the movie. With many villains and Gwen Stacy present, things got muddy in no time. Thomas Haden Church, who played Sandman, noted that Raimi admitted it was too much to handle. “Sam [Raimi] has gone on record as saying, “Hey we tried to shove ten pounds of story into a five-pound bag.” Even he thought it was just too much. And, to some extent it led to Sam and Sony to part ways,” he told Joblo.

Still A Solid Film Years Later

Years after its release, many have changed their minds about this superhero film. The same fans that wrote scathing remarks on message boards now appreciate what it chose to accomplish. It packs all the insanity of the comic books into a flowing 2 hour and 19-minute flick. Actor Tobey Maguire still delivers a fantastic performance as Spider-Man. “I probably had the most fun playing like the darker side of Peter, just because it was different and fun and kind of unexpected I felt like for the character,” the actor told Collider in 2007. While many declare 2002’s Spider-Man as king, Spider-Man 3 can still deliver quality entertainment on a random movie night.
