Cameron Monaghan Announces Decision To Leave ‘Shameless’

Published

Another one bites the dust. Actor Cameron Monaghan recently took to Instagram to announce his decision to leave Shameless. Not only is he exiting the show, but he is doing so quite abruptly— informing the public of his departure just a week before his final episode airs.

Saying Goodbye To Ian Gallagher

“I have been a series regular on this show for roughly ten years,” Monaghan wrote on Instagram. “I was the tender age of 15 when we shot the pilot, and I came of age in so many ways, both legally and personally. I was very lucky to mature and grow with this show. Experiencing so many firsts, maturing as an actor, a professional, and a human. In the process of gaining friends, family, and the best coworkers a very lucky actor could ask for, and for this, I can be nothing but gracious. All good things come to an end. An old cliche, but one that rings true with a sincerity and clarity especially in moments like these. Everything ends.”

The show is currently airing its ninth season and recently celebrated their 100th episode.

The Second Major Shameless Character To Go

Although Monaghan’s decision may seem sudden, he said that he’s known for a while he would be closing the chapter on Ian Gallagher. However, he wanted to wait to make the announcement as to not give away any spoilers; he wanted to let viewers experience the character’s storyline organically.

This comes just weeks after Emmy Rossum’s announcement that this season will also be her last on the hit Showtime series. Rossum explained her decision in a Facebook post, saying that, because she is an only child, Shameless gave her the type of big family she never got in real life and that she feels “the opportunity to play Fiona has been a gift.”

Future Of Shameless Remains Unknown

Considering how central both Rossum and Monaghan’s roles are to the show, it will be interesting to see where the story goes in their absence.

I have known since last year, but I didn’t want to give it away too early as I wanted this season to be a surprise for the audience, allowing them to experience Ian’s unsure journey with his character. This role has been a joy to inhabit, a wild and special ride, and I’d like to thank #Shameless as well as you, the viewers, for being there with him. Goodbye, Ian Clayton Gallagher. We’ll meet again?
