Walk of Fame 25 Celebrity Couples Who Called Off Their Weddings Published 3 years ago on May 8, 2016 By Isabelle Garreaud Becoming engaged is supposed to be one of life’s greatest moments until your wedding day actually comes. Yet, sometimes, people break up before they even say “I do.” It can be a devastating time for the couple who thought they would be together forever and it can be even worse for celebrities who are in the spotlight when it happens. I guess it is better, though, to realize you don’t belong together before you get married because it certainly is easier to break up than divorce! Let’s look back at these celebrities who split before their wedding day! 1. Gwyneth Paltrow and Brad Pitt Maybe this is why Brad Pitt took so long to marry Angelina! His heart got broken by Gwyneth Paltrow, who broke off the engagement because she got cold feet. They were engaged for three years and the actress takes the blame for hurting Pitt. Rex/Rex USA In an interview with Howard Stern, Paltrow told him, “You can’t make that decision when you’re 22 years old … I wasn’t ready, and he was too good for me.” He is too good for all of us! 2. Sheryl Crow and Lance Armstrong In 2003, Lance Armstrong divorced Kristin Richard, his wife of 5 years and moved on to Sheryl Crow. In 2005, the announced their engagement and had a wedding planned for Austin. The cyclist avoided a second divorce, though, as he and the singer split up before they married. Rex/Rex USA Crow has said that she has no regrets with breaking up with Armstrong and told Goodhousekeeping, “I’m still old-fashioned, but I don’t think marriage is the be-all and end-all. It’s better to have three broken engagements than three divorces.” Ain’t that the truth! 3. Alexis Phifer and Kanye West Kanye West and Kim Kardashian both went through a lot of breakups before they settled for each other and became a famous couple in the media! Before Kim and even before Amber Rose, the rapper was dating the designer, Alexis Phifer. Their relationship started in 2002 and was on and off for the next 4 years before they became engaged. Rex/Rex USA They were engaged for 18 months before they called it off. Phifer has no hard feelings as she told People magazine, “It’s always sad when things like this end, and we remain friends. I wish him the best in his future and all of his endeavors. He’s one of the most talented people I’ve ever met.” 4. Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck Back in the early 2000’s, Bennifer was the most popular couple in Hollywood. They met on the set of the movie Gigli in 2002, as they were both starring in it and 3 months later, they announced their engagement. Lopez and Affleck planned for a Santa Barbara wedding to happen on September 14, 2003, which of course never happened. In January 2004, they officially split. Rex/Rex USA Affleck told GQ, “What was that guy’s name who killed his wife and dumped her off the side of a boat? Peterson. I remember thinking he actually gets slightly better treatment than I do in the press.” It could be worse, though. I mean, have you ever watched Gone Girl? 5. Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth They were a match made in heaven but they drove fans and the media crazy for their on and off again relationship. Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth fell in love in real life while filming the Nicholas Sparks’ film, The Last Song and 2 years later, they were engaged. Sadly, less than a year later, the couple split. Rex/Rex USA Yet, at the end of 2015, fans were delighted to see Cyrus and Hemsworth back together again and shortly after, the engagement ring was back on the singer’s finger! They are keeping their relationship, though, under wraps so now we just have to wait and see if they eventually walk down the aisle! 6. Courteney Cox and Johnny McDaid Maybe Courteney Cox is really meant to be with Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry)! Shortly after her divorce with David Arquette in 2013, the Friends actress began dating the Snow Patrol band member Johnny McDaid. They ended up being engaged for 17 months before they called it a quits. Rex/Rex USA Apparently, it was Cox’s 10-year-old daughter, Coco who took the news the hardest! The actress told Ellen Degeneres, “She wants to be the maid of honor, which I think is weird, but … she wants to be the flower girl, all the bridesmaids. She’s very excited about it.” Hopefully one day, Coco can have her dream wedding! 7. Naya Rivera and Big Sean Twitter seemed to be a big part of their relationship! The Glee star, Naya Rivera and Big Sean met over Twitter and in October 2014, they announced, via Twitter, that they were engaged! 6 months later, though, the couple broke up and the rapper soon began dating Ariana Grande. Rex/Rex USA There wasn’t much love after they broke up and we saw that on Twitter. In one post, Rivera said, “@bigsean stealing Rolexes from a lady’s house now. Maybe cuz I’m on ‘Glee’ and making more money or something. #triflin.” The tweet has since been deleted so maybe she found the watch? 8. Evan Rachel Wood and Marilyn Manson Honestly, I don’t think anyone thought this relationship would last! Besides the huge age difference, 19-year-old Evan Rachel Wood was a pretty-faced actress and Marilyn Manson was a goth rocker. Their paths collided at a party at the Chateau Marmont Hotel and in January 2007, they went public with their relationship. Getty Images For the next 4 years, they were on and off again until they got engaged in 2010, which, of course, didn’t last long. Wood explained to Net-a-Porter.com, “I wanted to break a mold for sure — I knew I was edgier, more alternative and weird and he was just what I needed because I felt really free with him. And that freedom was attractive.” 9. Britney Spears and Jason Trawick Jason Trawick was Britney Spears agent before he “quit” so he could be her boyfriend back in 2010. They dated for a little more than a year before they became engaged but that only lasted 2 years. The reason was said to be because Trawick wanted to have a life outside their relationship and Spears didn’t agree with that. Getty Images Spears was all good, though, as she told People magazine, “Jason and I have decided to call off our engagement. I’ll always adore him, and we will remain great friends.” 10. Uma Thurman and Arpad Busson In 2007, the actress and model began dating the London-based French financier, Arpad Busson and 5 years later, they had a daughter named Luna. They first got engaged back in 2008 but have been calling it off and on again, even around the time they had a child. The last time they announced their break up was in April 2014. Rex/Rex USA I guess we will have to see if they ever do get married but Thurman once told W magazine, “I’m not in a rush to do anything. One day, we’ll do it when we’re ready.” 11. Jamie Lynn Spears and Casey Aldridge I remember back in 2007 when everyone was so shocked that Britney Spears “innocent” little sister and beloved actress on Nickelodeon was pregnant at age 16. We were more so mad that Zoey 101 had to be canceled. Jamie Lynn Spears’ then-boyfriend, Casey Aldridge was the father and they got engaged shortly before Maddie Briann Aldridge was born. They purchased a house and were living in Mississippi, but eventually called off the engagement. Rex/Rex USA Now, Spears is married to the businessman, Jamie Watson, and shares joint custody of Maddie with Aldridge. 12. Tara Reid and Carson Daly In 2000, the American Pie actress, Tara Reid and the current host of The Voice, Carson Daly met on the set of MTV’s Total Request Live and soon became a couple. Later that year, Daly proposed and the two began living in an NYC apartment together. There never ended up being a wedding as they broke it off in June 2001. Rex/Rex USA Reid was heartbroken and told Cosmo, “I literally thought I couldn’t breathe … Every restaurant, every food, every song reminded me of him. I’m OK now, but there are times I definitely miss him. … I’ve never had my heart broken before.” We have all been there, unfortunately. 13. Sienna Miller and Tom Sturridge The British American actress started dating Tom Sturridge shortly after she broke up with Judd Law. After Sienna Miller got pregnant, the actor proposed with an old-fashioned Victorian ring in 2012 and 6 months later, Marlowe Ottoline Layng Sturridge was born. Unfortunately, her parents never ended up getting married. Rex/Rex USA In an interview with British Vogue, Miller said, “It’s been really quite overwhelming recently, just with the volume of everything going on. Everything is shifting.” 14. Katie Holmes and Chris Klein Here is another American Pie actress who called off her engagement! Before Katie Holmes became associated with Tom Cruise, she was dating her co-star, Chris Klein. 3 years later, in 2003, the couple became engaged but the ring came off in early 2005. Literally a couple of weeks later, Holmes went public with her relationship with Cruise. Rex/Rex USA Klein mentioned to SF Gate that he had no regrets over his relationship with Holmes as, “We found comfort in one another … We had a similar upbringing, and we were going through the same experience (in Hollywood). As the teenage craze came to an end, we found that our relationship was changing as well.” 15. Jennifer Love Hewitt and Ross McCall The Ghost Whisper star met Ross McCall when he made an appearance in one of the show’s episodes and shortly began dating. 2 years later, the couple became engaged but didn’t set a date or, at least, didn’t tell the public. In 2008, during the holidays, Hewitt and McCall called it off. Rex/Rex USA While it isn’t really known why they split, people were shocked considering the actress told People magazine, “I’m getting ready to turn 30 and get married and all those things. This year was my year to try to glow from within and feel better.” Guess this wasn’t her year! 16. Seana Gorlick and Tyler Posey I guess some middle school relationships last more than 2 weeks! Seana Gorlick was MTV’s “Teen Wolf” star’s middle school sweetheart and they dated for 10 years before their relationship ended. They were going to get married but obviously something in their relationship changed and in October 2014, they split. Rex/Rex USA Posey was heartbroken when he reported to Us Weekly. “You’re the first interview I’ve said this to. We have broken up … I’m just gonna get it out there because I get sad talking about it. I’m just gonna get it out there now so that hopefully people start hearing about it.” 17. Ryan Reynolds and Alanis Morissette Before he married (and divorced) Scarlett Johansson, Ryan Reynolds was dating the Canadian singer, Alanis Morissette. They met at a party back in 2002 and dated for 2 years before becoming engaged. I guess they kept putting off a wedding date in the 4 years they were engaged and surprised everyone when the couple announced that they decided to go their separate ways. Jim Smeal/BEI/Shutterstock Morissette’s album, Flavors of Entanglement was said to be about her breakup process and the song Torch is about Reynolds. 18. Perrie Edwards and Zayn Malik One Direction fans everywhere were devasted when Zayn Malik announced that he will be leaving the band but they were even more so when their dreams of marrying the singer were halted. In 2012, Malik began dating Little Mix’s, Perrie Edwards and a year later, they announced their engagement but it didn’t stick. Disney/REX/Shutterstock Now the singer is dating the supermodel Gigi Hadid and has covered up his tattoo he got for Perrie. 19. Karina Smirnoff and Maksim Chmerkovskiy Karina Smirnoff was a Dancing with the Stars dancer and not only won the 13th season but also the heart of the Ukraine instructor, Maksim Chmerkovskiy. On New Years Eve 2008, the instructor popped the question and the dancer happily said yes. 9 months later, however, the couple called the future wedding off. Broadimage/REX/Shutterstock There was no reason given as to why they split but I guess it simply wasn’t meant to be. 20. Kat Von D and Deadmau5 In 2012, the celebrity tattoo artist started dating the Canadian music producer, Joel Zimmerman, also known as Deadmau5. They were a cute couple, with their matching star tattoos below their eyes but unfortunately, they weren’t as permanent as their ink. Kat Von D, in December of 2012, said yes to her boyfriend’s marriage proposal via Twitter but 6 months later, she was tweeting goodbye to him. Jordan Strauss/Invision/AP She tweeted shortly after she broke the news, “Cheating on your loved one is the most hurtful thing one could do. I hate to have to admit, that this relationship is indeed over.” First Jesse James and now him, I hope she finds someone who won’t cheat on her! 21. Emily Maynard and Jef Holm Surprise, surprise. A Bachelorette couple doesn’t last but people really were still shocked when Emily Maynard and Jef Holm broke up. In the July 2012 season finale, the North Carolina single mom was debating between two bachelors but when Holm surprised her with a proposal, she said yes! The engagement didn’t last long before the couple realized that they weren’t a good pair and in October, they announced their split. Jerritt Clark/WireImage Maynard told People magazine, “I have nothing but respect and love for Jef and his family, but ultimately we are just at different points in our lives.” They seem to be on good terms as Holm congratulated his Ex last year after she got pregnant! 22. Mezhgan Hussainy and Simon Cowell Mezhgan Hussainy was a makeup artist on the set of American Idol, where she met the infamous “no” judge back in 2003. They dated for 7 years before they Cowell popped the question and, of course, Hussainy said yes. 2 years later, though, decided to take a break from each other and the judge told U.K.’s Daily Mirror that he didn’t know what was going to happen. Bryan Bedder/Getty Images The engagement ended up being called off and Cowell later said that he regretted his relationship with her. Ouch! 23. Crystal Harris and Hugh Hefner Leave it to the Playboy couple to be the only ones on the list that successfully get back together. Crystal Harris was the 2009 Playboy Playmate of the Month of December and at the time, had been dating Hugh Hefner since January. The next year, they got engaged but 5 days before their wedding in June 2011, Harris broke it off after a heated argument. Ethan Miller/WireImage Yet, they managed to get over their differences, which apparently didn’t have to do with their huge age difference and got married on Dec. 31, 2012, in a small private wedding. They are currently still going strong! 24. Kelly Osbourne and Luke Worrall Another celebrity cheating scandal. Kelly Osbourne broke up with her fiance after she found out that Luke Worrall had cheated on her with the model, Elle Schneider. They had a public argument on Facebook after the incident, which was later deleted, although by then, the world already knew what happened. Charley Gallay/Getty Images They met in 2008 as mutuals and were engaged the following year. Osbourne was engaged to him for 2 years before she found out about his affair. 25. Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland Just like his character, Jack Bauer in 24, Kiefer Sutherland can’t seem to keep a girl but, at least, it isn’t because they get killed! Back in 1990, the actor met Julia Roberts on the set of Flatliners and started dating. A couple of months later, they got engaged and set a date for the wedding! The ceremony was supposed to be on June 14th, 1991, but 3 days before that, the actress called it off. Ron Galella, Ltd./WireImage She claimed that Sutherland was cheating on her with the go-go dancer, Amanda Rice, which the actor denied. Whether it was true or not, the trust was gone and they never got back together. SHARE this article if you were surprised so many celebrities called off weddings!
