So, What Does Britney Spears Think Of “Baby One More Time” Now?

Nearly 20 years ago, Britney Spears came on the pop scene with her smash hit, “Baby One More Time.” It’s still one of the biggest tracks of her career. But how does Spears feel about the song now? Hear it from Britney herself and discover more about the track!

Instincts Take Over

At just sixteen years old, Spears was signed to Jive Records and in need of a song that would allow her to make her mark. She spent half a year recording material, but hadn’t found that hit single yet… until “Baby One More Time”. To her, it was “one of those songs you want to hear again and again.” But, before this major song was released by Spears in 1998, would you believe the track almost went to another musical act?

An R&B Hit?

Surprisingly, the song was originally meant for ’90s R&B group TLC, but the group passed. Not only did it not fit their style, the ladies thought the lyrics could be connected to domestic violence. The song was actually rejected by quite a few acts, including Robyn and the Backstreet Boys. It was truly destined for Spears.

An International Record

Spears actually traveled abroad to record “Baby One More Time” with songwriter and producer, Max Martin. “I remember being so in awe of Stockholm,” she reflected. “I was out there for, like, ten days, but we were so busy in the studio I didn’t have time to go out and explore on that first trip.”

An Iconic Video

The great track was coupled with its equally unforgettable music video which was directed by Nigel Dick. Shot in Venice High School in Los Angeles, Spears rocked a school uniform and midriffs while dancing with her background dancers. Not only was the song catchy, but the dancing and looks throughout made the video truly iconic.

An Unforgettable Memory

When asked about the song and having 20 years in the industry under her belt, Spears couldn’t believe how fast time flew. However, “Baby One More Time,” will have a special place in her heart forever. “Wow, that went quick. It was such a fun and crazy time, it was a bit of a blur,” she said of the 20th anniversary. “I knew it was a great song. It was different and I loved it, [but] I don’t think you can anticipate how a song is going to be received.” Thankfully, listeners loved it too, and now she’s one of the biggest pop stars in the world!
