Little Boy Dominates Jimmy Kimmel’s Geography Challenge After Everyone Else Fails

It’s no secret that Americans can sometimes have a less-than-impressive awareness of the world outside of the United States. After all, in a nation so uniquely powerful and massive, it can be all too easy to get by without knowing much about other countries. Jimmy Kimmel brought this problem out into the open.

A Comedy And A Tragedy

Earlier in July, late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel aired a segment that, while undoubtedly hilarious, did little to disprove that stereotype.

Thrillist

The premise was simple: Kimmel took to the streets of Los Angeles to ask locals to point to a country on a world map and correctly identify it. Not a specific country — just any one they could properly label.

Breaking The Internet

The results were disastrous. One of the patrons Jimmy Kimmel stopped mistook the state of Alaska for Greenland, his own native nation. Another was under the impression that the continent of Africa was one country. Some couldn’t even find the United States.

TooFab

Unsurprisingly, the clip provoked quite a reaction on Twitter.

“I weep for humanity,” said one user. “Most of them don’t even know where their own country is on the map.”

“And that’s why the Europeans are making fun of you,” teased another.

A Lone Hero Emerges

After a way-too-long series of failed attempts, the video ended on a more hopeful note: one young man stepped up to single-handedly redeem his nation’s reputation. Not only did the boy pass the test with flying colors by accurately naming one country; he also went on to identify tons more, including just about all of South America.

The Daily Beast

Social media users made sure to give the child his due credit.

“We should be more like that kid,” said one admirer.

Among the many singing his praises, another user summed it up best: “God bless that kid at the end for restoring my faith in America.”
