How ‘Black Panther’ Became A Complete Gamechanger In Hollywood

Published

on

2018 was all about Black Panther. As the highest grossing film of the year, it resonates with every movie lover. As a superhero movie, it did the unthinkable with its Oscar nomination for Best Picture. We look at why this was one of cinema’s most important releases in recent years.

Deeper Than Bad Vs Good

The hero versus villain plot is something found in virtually every superhero film. Black Panther takes this formula and truly makes it personal. T’Challa must take back his throne from his adversary (and cousin) Erik Killmonger.

What makes this unique is their backgrounds. T’Challa comes from a long line of royalty. Killmonger grew up having to struggle in the mean streets of Oakland. The black-ops soldier shows disdain towards Wakanda for not helping black people outside the region. For a superhero film, its racial tones led to many real-life debates around the world.

Wakanda Forever

Africa has been poorly depicted in numerous films over the years. With Wakanda, they were able to give it a futuristic makeover. “The movie asks: well, if you’ve never been colonized, then what were you doing while that was happening to the rest of Africa? You had to just be watching, right?,” actor Chadwick Boseman told The Guardian.

Marvel

Over in Africa, a vast majority of people praised the film’s portrayal of their country. One thing they took away is how they have the tools to make Wakanda a reality. “What we can learn from this film is that Africa has always had potential—the gold, the diamonds, and everything. It’s only we were not able to work on that in the years that went by, but still, Africans individually can still pursue their dreams,” journalist Patrick Kanyamozi told The Root.

Giving Others A Chance

At that point, having a movie with a predominantly black cast gain such universal buzz was a rarity. While films such as Moonlight and Hidden Figures were critical darlings, they didn’t become box office hits. Being connected to Marvel is one thing, but many saw this as something more.

Marvel

“For people of color, a superhero — that’s something that we would hope for. For it to be here, it’s a testament that we can open a movie. It’s something that maybe encourages us. If we can do it here, we can do it elsewhere,” actor Courtney B. Vance told Variety. The success of Black Panther has found Hollywood executives changing their tune for the future. For everyone involved with this movie, this is the kind of progress they’ve wanted.
