‘Black Mirror’ Season 5 Has An Episode Where You Choose What Happens As You Watch

Published

on

Bloomberg recently released a report that has Netflix audiences awestruck. Black Mirror, the sci-fi social commentary on technology’s powerful influence, is releasing an episode where viewers get to choose the plot. As if Charlie Brooks didn’t make the show morally questioning enough, now audiences will be in control of the outcome. This venture into adult interactive viewing should do great things for Netflix. Here’s what we know so far.

What Does Creator Charlie Brooks Have In Store?

This new Black Mirror episode is already grabbing the attention of those who have seen the previous four heartwrenching seasons. No word has gotten out to hint at the content of the interactive episode, but Charlie Brooks has mentioned his desire to create sequels for some of the previous episodes, including ‘White Bear’ and ‘Be Right Back’ (from season 2). He may also bring back two characters or actresses from ‘Hated in the Nation,’ Kelly Macdonald and Faye Marsay.

This won’t be the only series, however, to get interactive episodes. Netflix insiders have confirmed at least three other projects with audience-led experiences.

Black Mirror Takes Interactive TV To Adult Audiences

Though this seems to be bringing Netflix a lot of attention, this isn’t the first project they’ve done with interactive television. In June, they released several children’s shows such as Puss in Boots: Trapped in an Epic Tale and Buddy Thunderstruck: The Maybe Pile, which allowed viewers to interact and make decisions for characters.

However, Black Mirror is the first in the adult market to bride this gap. Netflix certainly chose a bold series to begin this venture, but with its anthology format and wild futuristic worlds, it seems to be a perfect fit.

Will Interactive TV Become The Norm?

Other streaming services are competing with Netflix for the lead in audience-led viewing experiences. HBO released its murder-mystery show Mosaic first as a TV series, but soon added an interactive viewing experience in a separate app. There’s no doubt other streaming services will follow suit soon enough.

There is no official release date yet for when the new Black Mirror season will become availableHowever, it may come out as early as December 2018.
