Billy Eichner Wants To Play Batwoman

Updated

on

Actress Ruby Rose exiting Batwoman rocked the entire Arrowverse to its core. Without the actress, fans are clueless about who’ll step in to fill those empty shoes. Fortunately, Billy Eichner has thrown his hat in the ring to take over the role.

Billy With The Mask

Unlike some actors, Eichner didn’t campaign for the role in a random interview. The actor/comedian took to Twitter with a not so subtle wish. “Just finished cleaning my apt again so…. can I play Batwoman?”,” Eichner jokingly stated. Hours after the tweet, Eichner wanted to do a quick check up on things. “Any update on this? Just disinfected the soles of my shoes, would love to play Batwoman now if possible, thx,” Eichner also tweeted.

Portraying Batwoman would be a completely new experience for Eichner. The actor is mainly known for his comedic roles in shows such as Difficult People and Billy on the Street. Eichner also portrayed Taylor Swift in the music video for “Glitter and Ribs.” This doesn’t mean he can’t get into a different zone. In American Horror Story, Eichner has portrayed Manson Family member Tex Watson. In American Crime Story: Impeachment, Eichner will portray Drudge Report creator Matt Drudge.

Stephanie’s Coming Through

Eichner isn’t the only person looking to take over Rose’s role. Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Stephanie Beatriz is also on the hunt. On Twitter, the actress made it clear she’s doing some research. “*Reads everything about Batwoman*,” Beatriz stated. The actress has earned two Gracie Allen Awards for Outstanding Female Actor in a Supporting Role in a Comedy or Musical.

You Look Different

This wouldn’t be the first time someone in a lead role was replaced. In That ’70s Show, Lisa Robin Kelly found fame portraying Eric Forman’s sister Laurie. Unfortunately, Kelly left the show midway through season three because of alcoholism. While Kelly returned for a few episodes in season five, her alcoholism persisted. She was replaced by Christina Moore.

Janet Hubert wowed audiences as Vivian Banks on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. After season three, however, Hubert got into a heated argument with network executives. Her main problem was that actor Will Smith was getting too much airtime. Hubert wanted the show to revolve around her, which didn’t sit well with anyone. Hubert was fired and replaced by Daphne Reid for the rest of the show’s run. To this day, Hubert is still angry with Smith for her firing.

A Completely New Character?

While talks of finding a replacement for Ruby Rose as Batwoman are ongoing, the network is thinking of an alternative solution. There are discussions about having a brand new character to portray Batwoman. As expected, this can lead to some criticism from Arrowverse fans. In the comic books, Kate Kane has been the only character to wear the Batwoman mantle.

Throwing in someone new can cause some concerns in the Arrowverse. Batwoman made her Arrowverse debut in the 2018 crossover event Elseworlds. With plans for Kane in the works for months, writers will have to make drastic changes. The Arrowverse has delivered original superheroes in the past but nothing of this caliber. Arrow co-creator Marc Guggenheim believes this will lead to something unique. “I’m a big believer that any time you face a production challenge, and sometimes it’s in cast while sometimes it’s just logistics, in that challenge, lies a creative opportunity,” Guggenheim told Collider.

We Need A Hero

For now, a decision hasn’t been made on who’ll take over the lead role. With the current coronavirus epidemic, there’s a lot more time to discuss things. The second season of Batwoman is slated for a January 2021 premiere, but things can change. With many projects being delayed, the show could fall in line for a spring 2021 premiere. Much like any comic book storyline, fans will be wondering what happens next.
