Bill Murray Did a Very Bill Murray Thing to Mahershala Ali and He Thought It Was Classic

If there’s anything you can expect from Bill Murray, it’s the unexpected. The beloved comedian is known for pulling spontaneous moves such as stealing French fries from customers at restaurants, photobombing engagement photos, even hopping in to join an engagement party. So, it wasn’t a huge surprise when he poured vodka on Golden Globe winner Mahershala Ali — it’s Bill Murray, after all.

Crashing An Interview

After the Golden Globes ceremony, Green Book star Ali was celebrating the film’s success at the Beverly Hills Hotel when Murray popped in on an interview.

During a visit to the Ellen Show, Ali explained, “Bill was toasting us. Bill toasted his glass on Viggo’s head, Linda’s head, and then toasts on my head, and vodka spills all over my face and is running down into my eyes and in my mouth.” Surprise! Ali, consider yourself Murray-ed.

A Vodka Facial

Ali is a non-drinker and admitted, “It felt like hot acid rolling down my face.” While he wrapped up his interview with the journalist from The Hollywood Reporter, he kept his eyes closed to protect them from additional burning.

No hard feelings, however. While most folks might feel rattled while talking to the press about a highly coveted win only to find themselves spritzed with liquor, Ali laughed off the surprise, saying, “Hey, it’s Bill Murray.”

A Star Is Rising

Although Ali was nominated for a Golden Globe in 2017 for the film, Moonlight, his win for Best Supporting Actor for Green Book is the first time he’s cinched the trophy, and he may score another one for this role at the Oscars.

In January, the third installment of HBO’s True Detective begins, a series in which Ali plays a state trooper in Arkansas haunted by a case from his past. He’s already earning critical buzz for his performance in the series, which began on January 13. Thank goodness he’s got Bill Murray to keep him humble.
