‘Big Little Lies’ Second Season To Debut In June?

Published

on

Upon its debut, HBO’s Big Little Lies captivated audiences. The show was slated to be a seven episode miniseries, but high praise gave it another season. With production finishing over the summer, many people have been waiting for brand new episodes. Fortunately, they’re coming sooner than they think.

In Time For Summer

On New Year’s Eve, Nicole Kidman appeared on CNN’s New Year’s Eve Live with Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen. When discussing the new year, Big Little Lies came up. Kidman graciously gave Cooper a projected premiere time.

“June, I think. We’re looking at June. We’re still in the midst of editing it, but, um, thanks for asking ’cause we’re glad that people are excited about it,” she said. If this is the case, the show will shortly follow the finale of Game of Thrones.

Moving On Up

Big Little Lies‘ first season garnered a slew of awards. At the Emmys, it gained wins for Outstanding Limited Series, Best Actress, and Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series. It also managed to get the TCA Award for Outstanding Achievement in Movies, Miniseries and Specials.

One minor controversy regarding its awards involved its miniseries roots. When HBO gave it a second season, networks were upset with the show gaining miniseries nominations. At the 2018 Producers Guild Awards, the show was moved to the drama series category. “In accordance with our rules, we have determined that the most equitable course of action is to adjust the ballots – placing Big Little Lies in the Episodic Drama category for which it now is qualified – and re-start the voting afresh,” stated an email sent from the Producers Guild.

A Streep Of Excellence

The second season of Big Little Lies will feature Meryl Streep as Perry’s mother Mary Louise. This will be Streep’s return to HBO following 2003’s Angels in America. The six episode miniseries earned her Outstanding Lead Actress wins at the Golden Globes and Emmys.

Season two will also find Crystal Fox, Mo McRae, Martin Donovan, and Denis O’Hare joining the cast.
