How The Big “Glass” Twist Reimagines “Unbreakable”

Published

on

M. Night Shyamalan’s most recent movie Glass is the newest feature in the filmmaker’s line of psychological thrillers based around humans with exceptional abilities. These films, including the afformentioned Glass as well as its precursers Unbreakable and Split, do not focus so much on superheroes, however, as they do troubled and conflicted persons.

*Spoilers Ahead*

An Interesting Angle

In these films, there are three main characters that all come together in the latest installment: Mr. Glass, a man whose body is extremely fragile, David Dunn, who is quite the opposite as he is seemingly unbreakable, and Kevin Wendell Crumb, a troubled characte with multiple personalities, some interesting and some downright dangerous.

A fact that is revealed in the newest film that adds quite an interesting take to the saga is that these characters seem to have inherited their unique attributes from sources of trauma. This angle is in many ways interesting and seperates these movies’ characters from most modern day cinematic depictions of persons with strange and powerful attributes.

Box Office Success

Glass has faired quite well at the box office thus far. In the first couple of weeks the thriller has put up decent numbers, with roughly $16 million in earnings at 3,844 sites for the weekend. While this showing is not incredible it is hopefully not a disappointment.

These numbers set Glass on track to be the leader of the North American weekend box office for the second consecutive weekend. It is worth noting, however, that the past two weeks have been somewhat low-key in terms of box office showings.

Mild Reception

Despite leading at the theaters, Glass has been welcomed with a fairly low critical review. Online movie review site Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a light 36% while reviewers on Metacritic gave it just a slightly better score at 42%.

The psychological thriller trilogy of UnbreakableSplit and now Glass certainly has some intriguing qualities. These qualities are paying off at the box office, but may not be garnering the best reception.
