ABC recently released Beyoncé’s Making The Gift, an hour-long special which allowed fans to go behind the scenes into the making of her latest compilation album. The documentary also gave viewers a rare look at fun moments with Beyoncé and her family!

Making The Gift

The special highlighted the hard work behind the compilation album, The Lion King: The Gift, Beyoncé’s self-described “love letter to Africa.” It was released on July 19 alongside Disney’s live-action remake of The Lion King. Beyoncé, who starred as Nala, served as executive producer while also contributing vocals to the album, which was produced through Parkwood Entertainment and Columbia Records. Other artists featured included Jay-Z, Pharrell, Jessie Reyez, Tekno, Yemi Alade, Burna Boy, WizKid, Tiwa Savage, Shatta Wale, Tierra Whack, and more. The album, which tied in the themes from The Lion King, also included interludes with clips from the remake of the film. The special showcased the amount of time that each artist, dancer, and producer put in behind the scenes to make Beyoncé’s vision truly come to life. Before any songs could be recorded, that meant breaking down the scenes from the movie as well as incorporating native African language, dance, and music.

Back To Africa

In the special, Bey also shared intimate, never-before-seen moments with her husband Jay-Z, and their children Blue Ivy Carter, and twins Rumi and Sir Carter. Viewers were able to see their close bond, specifically with the singer and her children. “When you’re a mother, there’s a love that you experience with your kids that’s deeper than anything you can imagine,” she said. “The love is beyond Earth and beyond time and space, and it’s a connection that will be constant.” For fans, it was especially exciting to see the toddler twins as their parents have mostly kept them out of the private eye. One of the special moments of the film included a family trip for the Carters to Africa. Beyoncé has visited the continent several times already but sharing the experience with her family was something that she said she would never forget. “Visiting countries in Africa, it’s always an emotional experience for me. It feels like I’m making peace with a part of me that’s yearning for my ancestral connection,” Bey explained of the trip. “I was blessed to be able to relive some of the experiences that I’ve been very fortunate to have over the years with my entire family.”

A Rising Star

The special showcased Beyoncé and the other artists recording their parts for the album. However, it was the mom’s recording session with seven-year-old Blue for the popular track “Brown Skin Girl” that was one of the scenes that stood out. In the scene, Blue Ivy showed off her great vocal skills on the hook while Beyoncé holds the lyrics for her and coaches her on the right notes. The impactful track earned the rising star her first Billboard Hot 100 entry. For Beyoncé, though, the song, and really the entire album, was about much more than the charts and sales. “It was really important to me that the music was not the typical soundtrack, but something that kids felt safe and excited to share with their parents, as well as the parents with their kids,” she said. “When I see fathers singing ‘Brown Skin Girl’ to their daughters, to know that my daughter can have the same opportunities and feel confident and feel like she doesn’t have to take her braids down and she can comb her afro out and she can glisten in her brown skin. That is why I make music.”
