We’re going back to the 1990s with the upcoming quasi-revival of the ’90s smash hit drama, Beverly Hills, 90210. Star Tori Spelling recently commented fans will be pleasantly surprised with the reboot. But what should we expect? Will the whole cast reunite? What’s the plot? You doubtlessly have questions and we’re here to spill the details.
Reuniting The Original Crew
In February 2019, Beverly Hill, 90210 star Tori Spelling revealed she would be reuniting with her former costars in a new version of their iconic 1990’s drama. She commented, “It is the OG [original] crew back together, and we’re playing heightened versions of ourselves. The fans will be pleasantly surprised, though, because we will intercut that with scenes from the show. So, it’ll be a whole ensemble of cast.”
Fans can expect to see their favorite actors again for the first time since the show’s finale in 2000. This includes Spelling (Donna Martin), Jason Priestley (Brandon Walsh), Shannen Doherty (Brenda Walsh), Jennie Garth (Kelly Taylor), Ian Ziering (Steve Sanders), Brian Austin Green (David Silver), and Gabrielle Carteris (Andrea Zuckerman). Unfortunately, ‘90s heartthrob Luke Perry, who played Dylan McKay, passed away in April 2019 after suffering a stroke. Garth explained, “Tori [Spelling] and I certainly had conversations with him specifically about this [reboot].” According to them, Perry was into the idea of playing Dylan McKay once again, but unfortunately, he passed away before filming began.
What’s The Plot?
The plot is the most important thing to consider. What are the characters going to be up to in 2019? We haven’t seen them in nearly 20 years. According to the show’s February press release, the cast won’t always be portraying their legendary characters, but instead the actors “will play heightened versions of themselves.”
“Getting [a reboot] going may make for an even more delicious soap than the reboot itself,” the press release explained. “What will happen when first loves, old romances, friends and frenemies come back together, as this iconic cast – whom the whole world watched grow up together – attempts to continue from where they left off?” Spelling added, “There’s definitely going to be moments for the die-hard fans…where they’ll get to see us play Kelly and Donna and all the other characters.” So, this is classified as a quasi-revival, meaning the show isn’t picking up where it ended in 2000, but instead adding a fresh new take in 2019. Are you intrigued yet?
The cast and crew are working hard to make sure fans are familiar with the original show’s setting, including various teen hang-out spots, even the iconic Peach Pit diner, featured on the show. Garth commented, “We’re working on a location right now for our new version of the Peach Pit. You’ll be seeing the Peach Pit.” While the diner won’t look exactly the same as it did in the ’90s, it’ll be enough to satisfy fans.
Spelling and Garth are heavily involved in the revival, not just as actors but with a new title—co-creators. The actors, who portrayed onscreen best friends, stayed close after the original show’s finale in 2000 and said this was the best time for a revival. “We have gotten to the point in our lives where we just want to work together. Our kids are friends, and we want our families together all the time, so we wanted to develop something together,” Spelling said. “And that’s when we started saying, ‘Was it the right time to do something with 90210 finally?”
The co-creators are involved in every production element, even making sure the quasi-revival’s theme song and credits are the same as the original’s iconic theme song. They don’t want to disappoint fans. After all, this show is for the fans. You can see your favorite Beverly Hills, 90210 cast members and characters again for six episodes starting on Wednesday, August 7 on FOX. Are you ready?
