At this point, everyone and their mother has seen Avengers: Endgame. The Marvel movie concludes the Infinity Saga based around Thanos and the Infinity Stones. One of the most memorable lines in the film is “I love you, 3000.” According to writer Christopher Markus, this wasn’t in the original script.
So Much Love
In an interview with Fandango, Markus discussed some of the film’s biggest moments. As expected, the “I love you, 3000” line came up. Markus stated that Robert Downey Jr.’s real-life relationship with his kids influenced the line. “Well much as we’d like to take credit for what is inevitably going to be one of the most memorable lines in MCU history, that is something that Robert and his children actually say to each other, and he brought it from real life onto the set,” Markus said to Fandango. Co-writer Stephen McFeely also weighed in on this beloved line. “The script was, “Love you tons. Love you tons.” And now it’s, “Love you tons. Love you 3000,” he also told the movie website.
One fan theory surrounding that line included the overall combined run time of the MCU films. With Endgame, the accumulative time is 2,871 minutes. With Spider-Man: Far From Home‘s rumored two-hour runtime, that would equal 3,000 overall minutes.
I Am Iron Man
Downey Jr. helped kick off the MCU with 2008’s Iron Man. His portrayal of the iconic Marvel character gained universal praise from fans and critics alike. Over the years, he’s earned four People’s Choice Awards for his performance, including one for Favorite Movie Superhero. Like Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, no one can imagine anyone as Iron Man other than Downey Jr.
When it came to Endgame, his seniority in the MCU came with a major perk. “[Robert Downey Jr.] was probably the only one to actually read the entire script. I think Benedict [Cumberbatch] got the script that included his scenes only,” Endgame co-director Joe Russo told Rotten Tomatoes. As expected, he kept silent around co-star Tom Holland.
The End Of An Era
Tony Stark’s death in the film marked the end of a long run for Downey Jr. Having to direct his farewell performance wasn’t as hard as many would think. “Joe and I are really performer-oriented. We love actors. And a large part of our process is figuring out how we bring actors most alive in their roles and how we give them autonomy and freedom to sort of play and go to very interesting places. That’s a big part of our creative process and our structural director process. Downey is the most wonderful collaborator. He’s a really brilliant filmmaker in his own right and he brings a tremendous amount of energy to the process. The way we direct him is by having very engaged and thorough creative discussions about what our vision for the movie is, about what we want to do with the character. He’s very helpful in terms of helping fill those ideas out,” Endgame co-director Anthony Russo told The Hollywood Reporter.
Avengers: Endgame became the first film to earn $1 billion at the box office on opening weekend. With over $2 billion earned so far, Avatar may lose its title of highest grossing movie ever. The 2009 film holds the title with $2.7 billion earned. While everyone is still reeling from Endgame, Spider-Man: Far From Home will answer some important questions. Endgame won’t be the only film for Downey Jr. this year. He’ll be featured in the forthcoming Jamie Foxx film All-Star Weekend. He’s also lending his voice to Doctor Dolittle in next year’s The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle.
