Benedict Cumberbatch Puts His Money Where His Mouth Is With Equal Pay for Women

Published

on

Benedict Cumberbatch says that he’ll refuse roles if female co-stars aren’t offered equal pay. Equal pay has become a major part of the feminist movement this year and Cumberbatch has taken center-stage in the movement.

Fighting the Good Fight

Avengers star, Benedict Cumberbatch, is fixing to avenge female oppression in the film industry. The beloved actor is known for playing offbeat roles that embody characters who fight the establishment. In The Imitation Game, Cumberbatch champions LGBTQ+ rights while defeating the Nazis.

Fast-forward to today (in real life) and Cumberbatch is making equally forceful waves in the movie realm. His production company, SunnyMarch, is comprised almost entirely of women save for himself and a few choice pro-feminism males.

The Force is Female

Cumberbatch’s other production company, Hera Pictures, has just acquired featured film rights to Megan Hunter’s highly anticipated debut novel, The End We Start From. Cumberbatch was attracted to the empowering tale that celebrates the bravery of motherhood. “The End We Start From is a stunning tale of motherhood,” Cumberbatch said. The project will be one of many upcoming projects focused on uplifting the feminist movement and highlighting female talent.

No Handouts, All Talent

Cumberbatch doesn’t see his companies’ focus as part of a political movement so much as a way to leverage untapped talent. Equal compensation doesn’t just produce equality, it brings out the best in his female actors. Numbers talk. When you’re paid the same, you know you’re valued the same— and that encourages stunning performances.

For many women in Hollywood, theirs is a tale of survival. In The End We Start From, the main story’s protagonist is forced to flee London as a refugee when her home is submerged in water. Cumberbatch says that he’s “thrilled to be bringing this story to life.”

The feminist movement is equally thrilled. Cumberbatch’s wife and Hollywood director, Sophie Hunter, is as well. What wife wouldn’t be pleased with a man as female-forward as the dashing Mr. Cumberbatch?
