Baby Driver Star Ansel Elgort Lands Lead Role In “West Side Story” Remake

Published

Move over, Richard Beymer; there’s a new Tony in town. Baby Driver star Ansel Elgort has been cast to star as Tony in Steven Spielberg’s upcoming remake of the 1961 musical classic, West Side Story. But many movie fans have one question: what exactly will be involved in this remake?

The Perfect Musical

The original musical, adapted from William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, won the 1962 Best Picture Oscar. It is still beloved by fans today, with many debating on who was better: the Puerto Rican Sharks or the American Jets.

Tony and Maria (played by the late Natalie Wood) add more tension when they fall in love, and their relationship is one of the best love stories ever produced on film.

So, what will happen in the remake?

Same Storyline, Just A Different Take

Spielberg’s remake of the classic musical will have the same storyline. Tony and Maria will still fall in love and there will be racial tension. But, as always, Spielberg is expected to offer a brand-new, more authentic take to the classic.

Fans can be assured the remake will feature the original film’s iconic musical numbers, including Tony’s “Maria,” Maria’s “I Feel Pretty,” and their duet, “Tonight.”

Perfect For The Role

This isn’t Elgort’s first time singing, as fans already know. The leading actor offered his musical talents in his popular film, Baby Driver. All Elgort will have to do is undergo more musical training for his new role, where he has some big shoes to fill to replace Beymer’s original performance.

But Elgort will attract audiences as a leading man in Hollywood, after starring in Baby Driver, The Fault in Our Stars, and the Divergent film series.

Filming for the West Side Story remake will begin in 2019. No release date and additional cast members have been announced.
