Awkwafina Lands Role In Upcoming ‘Jumanji’ Sequel

Published

on

Awkwafina has been one of the hottest names in Hollywood since last summer’s Crazy Rich Asians. The 30-year-old has been getting role offers at every turn. While fans are wondering what the comedian will do next, one confirmed role will find her on the same screen with the biggest movie star in the world.

Riding Through The Jungle

The New York native has confirmed to be a part of the sequel to Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. Released back in 2017, the film grossed $962 million worldwide. Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Nick Jonas, and Karen Gillan will reprise their roles.

Sony Pictures

Also returning from Welcome to the Jungle are director Jake Kasdan and writers Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner. “Our hope is to keep a long continuity through the whole thing, even though the story that we’re telling in the second movie, the movie that we’re working on right now is much more connected to the first movie that I made a year ago than it is to the original,” Kasdan told SlashFilm.

Making Television History

2018 was an explosive year for Awkwafina, with performances in the aforementioned Crazy Rich Asians and Ocean’s 8. Last October, she became the first Asian actress to host Saturday Night Live in 18 years. Lucy Liu, who hosted in 2000, was a major inspiration for her.

NBC

“I love Lucy Liu. I was obsessed with Charlie’s Angels. To see an Asian-American on there back in 2000 was quite moving, and to be there and to know that I was the second — it was incredible,” she told The Hollywood Reporter.

More Awkwafina In 2019

The Jumanji sequel, which comes out on December 13, isn’t the only thing on Awkwafina’s plate. She’s slated to star in the drama films Paradise Hills and The FarewellBoth movies will have their worldwide premieres at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival.

Warner Bros. Entertainment

The actress will also lend her voice to this summer’s Angry Birds Movie 2.
