Awkwafina Shares A Personal Message About The Hard Road To Success

Published

on

In just a few years, Nora Lum (better known as Awkwafina) has grown from up-and-coming YouTube creator to full-blown star. The comedian, rapper, and actress appeared in not one, but two blockbuster films this year—Ocean’s 8 and Crazy Rich Asians. This week, she took to Twitter to reflect on her sudden Hollywood breakthrough.

Remembering Where She Came From

Life wasn’t always this glamorous for Awkwafina. In an open letter posted on the social media site, she recalled the state of her career just six years ago.

At the time, two of her rap songs had just gone viral. Popular as they were, the videos cost the artist her day job at a vegan bodega. After a major label chose to pass on signing her, she was left with no source of income and little hope.

Life In The Fast Lane

Fortunately, things have taken a turn for the better since the internet was first introduced to Awkwafina— a miracle that is not lost on her.

“Five years later, I’m in an Escalade in a gown, driving down Hollywood Blvd that they shut down for Crazy Rich Asians,” she noted in her post. “And I asked the driver for the aux to play Dreams by Fleetwood Mac.”

Awkwafina’s Valuable Advice

“I became teary, thinking about this moment, what it meant. I remembered those days when I got fired from my job for Awkwafina, when I was broke for Awkwafina, when I got kicked off line-ups because ‘Awkwafina is a joke’.”

Awkwafina was a dream I was chasing, and in some ways I am still chasing her,” the entertainer continued, leaving fans with a piece of advice. “But we need to take risks. We need to go broke. We need to prove them wrong, simply by not giving up.”
