Turns Out 96% Of ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Was CGI

Updated

on

Avengers: Infinity War was a massive film. From combining multiple film properties into one movie to having an interesting story that combines true emotion and heart-pounding action, it delivered. Comic book films rely on CGI more than any other genre for the pure fact that they are adapting material that can not be portrayed in real life in any realistic manner. Avengers: Infinity War had to portray a villain that is an alien that can wipe out half the universe. So as a result roughly 96% of the film is CGI. But how did this number get so high?

Several Main Characters Are CGI

Victoria Alonso, an Executive Producer of the film, stated in a behind the scenes featurette that there was 3000 shot in the film with about 2900 containing some sort of CGI. This makes perfect sense if take in the fact that the main villain is CGI, with Josh Brolin providing the voice.

Not only is Thanos entirely CGI, but every member of his Black Order is CGI too. It also applies to several characters on the heroes side. Groot, Rocket Racoon, and even Hulk for the brief appearance he has in the film. Adding to the amount of CGI are the characters that are played by actors but have CGI enhancements done to them.

CGI Enhancements To Human Characters

In order to bring the crazy and colorful costumes of the comic book heroes alive, sometimes CGI is required. For instance, Spider-Man’s suit was primarily CGI, with very few parts actually being worn by Tom Holland.

As you can see from the picture this rule also applies to Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man. Then, of course, there is Captian America’s best friend, Bucky Barnes, aka The Winter Soldier. His robot arm is entirely CGI, with Sebastian Stan wearing a green arm sleeve that will be replaced in the final cut of the film.

The Big Fight In Wakanda

The stakes are high, the Avengers are trying to save their friend Vision from death. Meanwhile, Thanos’ Black Order is there to take the Infinity Stone from him and give it to their master. A battle to rival the likes of Lord of the Ring ensues.

All the monsters, all of the heroes, all of the energy blasts had to be created in a quick and efficient manner. The sheer size and length of the battle make this scene one of the most CGI intensive scenes ever seen. When you take this all into account it really isn’t surprising that 96% of Avengers: Infinity War is CGI. This allowed the film to be as good as it is.
