It’s Groovy Baby, Yeah! Mike Myers Announces He May Make a Fourth “Austin Powers” Movie

Actor and comedian Mike Myers announced today that plans are in the works to make a fourth “Austin Powers” movie. It has been two decades since the first film, “Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery,” was released. On the 20th anniversary of that movie approaches, the original cast has opened up about the experience.

Myers, 53, opened up about how the movie was conceived and written. He told Hollywood Reporter, “After my dad died in 1991, I was taking stock of his influence on me as a person and his influence on me with comedy in general. So Austin Powers was a tribute to my father, who [introduced me to] James Bond, Peter Sellers, The Beatles, The Goodies, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore.”

Myers Wasn’t Sure Anyone Would Get “Austin Powers”

When they made the movie, even Myers was not convinced anyone would like it. He said, “I wrote it in 1995, and the bones of the script came out in two weeks. It was one of those things where I didn’t know if anybody would get this movie who didn’t grow up in my house. But when I showed it to [director] Jay Roach — we had met at a party and become movie buddies — he gave me 10 pages of typewritten notes. Everything he said made it better.

Not only was the movie a success but it spawned two sequels. Both The Spy Who Shagged Me and Goldmember also did very well at the box office. Director Jay Roach and Myers have been talking about doing a follow up film for a number of years. When talking about the possibility, Myers said, “I would love to do another, but you just have to see. I was devastated by my father’s death. But to have that turn into something that makes people happy is unbelievably satisfying. It’s that kind of stuff you never get used to or get tired of.”
