Ashton Kutcher Has Saved 6,000 Children From Exploitation

We all know and love Ashton Kutcher for his role in That 70’s Show. But now, fans are finding a whole new reason to respect the actor. That’s because Kutcher is lending his considerable talents to his charitable organization Thorn: Digital Defenders of Children. Read on to hear more about how Ashton Kutcher has saved 6,000 children from exploitation.

Save The Children

Kutcher has already proved that he’s much more than just a pretty face. Nowadays, the Butterfly Effect star has transformed into a financial guru. He’s guest starred on Shark Tank and invested in companies like Spotify, Airbnb, Fab, Dwolla, and Uber. As if that weren’t enough, Kutcher can add “activist” to his extensive list of accomplishments.

Many Ashton devotees would be shocked to know that the actor actually started the Thorn foundation with his ex-wife Demi Moore in 2009. The former Hollywood couple’s organization created software that helped to prevent the exploitation of children. When asked about his new role as a youth advocate, Kutcher told 48 Hours that “I have a hard time talking about this issue without being emotional…You can roll up your sleeves and go try to be like a hero and go save one person, or you can build a tool that allows one person to save a lot of people.”

Make A Difference

People magazine reported that Ashton’s charity Thorn: Digital Defenders has been integral in assisting the police in their fight for children’s rights. Thorn has released really positive numbers about the charity’s influence, including that it has already helped the cops recognize 5,894 victims of child trafficking. The non-profit organization has also saved over 100 children from life-threatening situations.

In 2017, the Just Married star delivered a short speech about present-day forms of slavery to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. At the political event, Kutcher tried to persuade Congress to enact laws to protect the rights of mothers and children. Ashton implored the committee, “I’m here today to defend the right to pursue happiness. It’s a simple notion: ‘the right to pursue happiness.’ It’s bestowed upon all of us by our constitution. Every citizen of this country has the right to pursue it.” Kutcher also told the administrators that his work with Thorn has become his full-time focus.

Be The Change

During his speech for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Ashton pointed out the significance of his charity’s work. Kutcher informed the commission that, “I’ve been on the other end of a phone call from my team, asking for my help because we had received a call from the Department of Homeland Security.” Ashton also stated to the Senate that “we were the last line of defense—an actor and his foundation were the potential last line of defense.” About the criticism that he’s received from people who questioned his non-profit work, Kutcher told the committee, “That’s my day job, and I’m sticking to it.”

Ashton’s organization has already received a grant from the End Violence partnership and has been featured on the Global Dispatches podcast. Recently, the charity’s Twitter account announced that Thorne has been selected to receive a portion of $280 million in funding from TED’s The Audacious Project. Incredibly, Kutcher’s charity had raised $27 million before it was granted its new financing. With over 17,000 followers on its Instagram account, the public response’s has been extremely positive. Kutcher’s charity is well on its way to completing its mission of giving children a better future. As Ashton told CNN Business, “Time is of the essence and capital helps us move faster…We need to make it a priority.”
