Amy Schumer has been a major player in both film and TV since competing in Last Comic Standing. In 2019, she ventured into motherhood with the birth of her son, Gene. Because of a blunder, Schumer was forced to change his middle name.
An Honest Mistake
Schumer gave her son the middle name Attell as a tribute to comedian Dave Attell. Attell and Schumer worked together on Trainwreck, I Feel Pretty, and Inside Amy Schumer. Unfortunately, the name Gene Attell threw some red flags.
“Do you guys know that Gene, our baby’s name is officially changed? It’s now Gene David Fischer. It was Gene Attell Fischer, but we realized that we, by accident, named our son ‘Genital,’” Schumer said on her podcast Amy Schumer Presents: 3 Girls, 1 Keith. While Gene is currently an infant, this blunder could’ve made him the butt of every joke in high school. Attell didn’t hold a grudge on the name change, though.
Love At First Sight
Gene is Schumer’s first child with farmer/cook Chris Fischer. The couple first met in mid-2017 through Schumer’s personal assistant (and Fischer’s sister), Molly. After some talking, things escalated quickly between the pair. They got married in Malibu, California only after a few months of dating. While some thought they were rushing it, the couple knew they were meant for each other.
The one thing that brought them together was farming. While Schumer is mainly known for her comedic skills, she has a history with farms. As a kid, the comedian spent her childhood hanging out at her father, Gordon’s, farm. Unfortunately, her father lost the farm when she was only 12 years old. In December 2016, Schumer surprised her dad by buying back the old farm. On Instagram, she shared an old video of her running through the farm. “Video from the farm when I was running away in the cornfield and my dad was taunting me because I wanted him to come with me. We lost the farm when we lost everything else. But today I got to buy it back for him,” she said on the social media platform.
Amy’s On Top
While she’s taking care of her new son, Schumer is still working on some projects. The comedian is currently focusing on her new sitcom Love, Beth. Aside from starring on the show, Schumer will write, direct, and produce the show. Kim Caramele and Kevin Kane, who worked with the comedian on Inside Amy Schumer, will also work on the 10-episode series.
Love, Beth was originally slated for a late 2020 release on Hulu. Unfortunately, the coronavirus situation put production on hold for the moment. For Schumer, this opened up the door for her new Food Network series, Amy Schumer Learns to Cook. This eight-episode series will find Schumer cooking meals with her chef husband. While the pair will enjoy making meals together, they’re doing it for a good cause. “Chris and I will be making donations to causes dear to us: The Coalition of Immokalee Workers’ Fair Food Program and select domestic violence organizations,” Schumer told Variety.
If that’s not enough, Schumer will also have a documentary on HBO Max titled Expecting Amy. This special will follow the comedian as they juggle being pregnant while touring the world. The documentary will be edited by Alexander Hammer, who is best known for frequent collaborations with Beyonce. HBO Max will go live this May with Schumer’s documentary arriving at an undisclosed date.
While comedy has been Schumer’s biggest love, her family has taken over that position. If she decides to have another kid in the future, Schumer will think twice about their middle name.
