Amy Poehler’s Unexpected (And Totally Awesome) Responses To A Comedic Interview

Amy Poehler has paved a strong path for her career as a comedian and entertainer. The Parks and Recreation star has had success as a comedian, writer, and actor over the years. But, when she was interviewed as one of The Hollywood Reporter‘s “40(ish) Most Powerful People in Comedy”, her answers made it clear that she stands for so much more than a cheap laugh.

What She Really Thinks of Her Career

For some of the more mild questions, the ever-humble Amy Poehler used some of her signature self-deprecating humor to poke fun at herself:

I’m funny because… “I don’t even know anymore.”

If I didn’t work in comedy…“I would never leave my house.”

Beyond bringing smiles to the faces of readers, these answers show that Poehler doesn’t shy away from honesty just to seem more successful, put-together, or funny. She is completely herself, which is what makes her so funny in the first place.

Asking Her Own Questions

Beyond her honesty, Poehler turned the tables on the Reporter, instead posing her own questions:

My most memorable heckler… “Who cares? The whole world is on fire.”

College comedy audiences are… “Kids that are afraid they will be shot in their own schools. What has happened to us?”

The funniest thing about the Trump administration is…“Are you kidding me?”

Poehler’s rhetorical questions poke fun at the irony of the questions the Hollywood Reporter asked. Just because she’s a comedian doesn’t mean she only responds to light-hearted, fluff interview questions.

Ignoring The Silly Questions

For some of the sillier questions, Poehler gave answers that had nothing to do with what was being asked:

Dream product endorsement: “A giant whale just died in Thailand after eating 80 plastic bags.”

Instead of answering the trivial question asked of her, Poehler reminds readers of the important ecological crisis occurring across the world today. Even though she’s discussing something serious, her “out-of-left-field” answers can still make the reader chuckle a bit, as her serious comments are still bursting with Poehler’s personality.

Answering The Ones That Really Matter

Poehler continues this trend in her next answer:

Guilty pleasure “Let’s not forget over 4,600 people have died in Puerto Rico.”

Here, Poehler’s snarky response to a pointless question is referring to the many lives lost in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. Just 9 months after the natural disaster, the ongoing need for aid in Puerto Rico has fallen out of the media in favor of newer, juicier stories, even though aid is still very much needed.

Why It Matters

While most readers were expecting an interview full of jokes and light-hearted responses, Poehler chose to confront some of the most difficult topics facing our country, especially the ones that we aren’t comfortable talking about. She uses her comedic voice to turn the tables on the Hollywood Reporter, completely undermining the answers they want and giving the ones that she thinks matter. This interview is just another piece of evidence that she is, in fact, one of the most powerful people in comedy, and that she won’t let her fame stand in the way of the things that truly matter to her.
