Following the success of the 2018 Tomb Raider film, a sequel is currently in the works. One thing fans are concerned about is what adventures will await archaeologist Lara Croft. Fortunately, Amy Jump has been picked to write her next journey.
Jump To The Beat
Jump got her start as an animator for the TV series Blunder. In 2011, she wrote the script for Kill List, which was directed by her husband Ben Wheatley. They continued working with each other on Sightseers, The ABCs of Death, A Field In England, High-Rise, and Free Fire. “She just wants to do the work, get in and get out. She’s not a cinephile, but she really cares about image and storytelling from her own unique perspective,” Wheatley told Little White Lies.
Aside from writing, Jump produced The Duke of Burgundy and two segments in The ABCs of Death. Sightseers earned her Best Screenplay awards at the Mar del Plata Film Festival and British Independent Film Awards.
Training For Days
Training for Tomb Raider was a grueling task for star Alicia Vikander. “They told me, ‘This is your day job; you’re going to have four months to prep for this role.’ I wanted for you to believe that this normal girl, or girl from a reality close to ours now, can go on those adventures and do the kind of things that were in the script. I wanted her to be strong. I loved that it was integrated in the story that she trains MMA, that she’s a bicycle courier. It takes a lot of exercise and a lot of eating to gain the amount of pounds that I did for this role. [The muscle gain diet] is one of the things that you learn. You need proteins, but you need carbs too. I had three eggs in the morning, then two fillets of fish, and a bowl of rice, at 10:00, 1:00, 4:00, and 7:00. Every day, and you eat every third hour,” she told GamesRadar.
On its opening weekend, Tomb Raider debuted at number two with $23.5 million earned. Overall, the movie earned $275 million worldwide. While the film fell flat in the United States, it brought in the big bucks overseas. At the 2019 Teen Choice Awards, it was nominated for Choice Movie Actress: Action and Choice Movie: Action.
When Will The Next Raid Happen?
Before the release of Tomb Raider, talks of a potential sequel came up. When asked about it, Vikander stated she’s ready for round two. “Yes, I adored taking on the role of Lara. So yeah, we’ll see. If there’s an audience out there for it, then I would love to,” she said in a Gamespot Q&A. At this writing. Vikander is the only person from the cast and crew returning for the sequel. GK Films will return to produce, but there’s no word if Graham King will return as producer.
So far, there’s no actual plot set for this film. There’s a great chance of them taking inspiration from the video game.Tomb Raider took elements from the 2013 game of the same name. The sequel can be inspired by 2015’s Rise of the Tomb Raider or 2018’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider. There’s a great chance it can dive into a completely different tale for Croft. With a new direction, there could be a new director in charge. Tomb Raider was Roar Uthaug’s first major film in his career. For the sequel, they could go for someone with a broader appeal. While no date is set for the sequel, fans can expect it to arrive sometime in 2021.
