Amazon Closed On A Record $13M Deal For Mindy Kaling’s Film “Late Night”

Published

Amazon Studios is currently in advanced negotiations to acquire U.S. rights for the up-and-coming film Late Night. Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival this January, Late Night received several high bidders, with Amazon taking the cake at $13 million. Written, produced, and costarring Mindy Kaling, this empowering comedy is sure to be the next box office blowout.

Late Night, A Fresh Comedy About Breaking Into The Entertainment Industry

“Late Night” co-stars Emma Thompson and Mindy Kaling as a hardened late-night comic (Thompson) and her unlikely Indian-American protege writer (Kaling). The film shows the challenges of breaking into the entertainment industry for someone who doesn’t quite fit in but has the talent to succeed nonetheless.

The movie itself reflects current industry trends, with producers and distributors being urged to take on films by women and minorities. Kaling said in an interview with Variety, “That story has been told many, many, many times by 52-year-old white men, and I love all those movies… [however] there was no one like me making those kind of films.”

Record-Breaking U.S. Only Deal Rattles Sundance Film Fest

The $13 million deal is one of the biggest to ever come from the Sundance Film Festival. It is one of the largest deals made at the festival. It topped Amazon’s previous $12 million pact for The Big Sick, yet fell a little short of Fox Shortlight’s pact for The Birth of a Nation.

Though not the biggest pact in Sundance history, Amazon is offering the $13 million for U.S. rights only. The other deals were made for global rights, which makes this the largest for the market size.

Watch Late Night On Amazon Prime Soon

Amazon Chief Jennifer Salke has known Mindy Kaling for many years. They worked together at NBC and on The Office. Salke is very pleased to have taken on such a breakthrough movie with Kaling, a woman inspiration, at the wheel.

Late Night premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 25. It will be in theatres and soon after available on Amazon Video.

When Real-Life Plays A Part In TV Plotlines

Even the best laid plans can go awry, and sometimes plotlines are created entirely to accommodate an actor’s unexpected personal issue. From pregnancies to off-set injuries (and of course plenty of on-set injuries), writers are reworking scripts so that you’d never know something else was happening behind the scenes. Think you know why an actor exited a show? We’ll bet you didn’t even realize that some major show plots happened out of serendipity.
