Woman with Alzheimer’s Becomes Grandma Every Day

Published

on

What if you could relive the first time you were told you’re going to be a grandmother, over and over again?

That’s just what happens to 77-year-old Setsuko Harmon who receives the news about her daughter, Christine Stone, being pregnant with equal delight even if she was told the information numerous times already.

Although Harmon is already technically a grandmother, as Stone has two teen stepchildren, this is the first time the 38-year-old is pregnant. She’s due in October this year.

In an interview with Today, Stone said she couldn’t get enough of her mother’s reactions. But there’s another reason why she’s videotaping her visits with her mother, which happens about twice a month as  she makes the more than 100-mile trip between Florence, SC to Charlotte, NC.

“I know she’s not going to be around forever, and I wanted my baby to see how excited her grandmother was that she was coming,” she said. “That’s one of the reasons I filmed it. I thought it was adorable how she got so excited and surprised.”

According to Stone, she also wants people to be educated about Alzheimer’s disease. However, Christine Stone’s father, Bob Harmon, finds it hard to approve his wife’s recent viral video stardom, having been played for over 50,000 times. Whereas his daughter finds joy, Harmon can only be reminded of the grim effects of Alzheimer’s.

“Everything is question after question. Where’s this room? Where’s that?” he said. “People who don’t know about Alzheimer’s, really don’t understand what’s going on.”

According to Alzheimer’s Association, over five million Americans are suffering from the condition. This is expected to reach 16 million in 2050.

Much of the estate is as it was during the 15 years Jackson called it his home, except for a few glaring differences – namely, the removal of the fun-fair rides that gave the home its whimsical name Neverland Ranch.
