The tabloids (and Twitter!) went berserk when Keanu Reeves was witnessed holding hands with Helen Mirren, 74, at the LACMA Art + Film Gala recently. Yep, you read that correctly! Reeves, 55, arm-in-arm with the famous dame, multi-award-winning actress revered for her role in The Queen as… er, the Queen.
A Case Of Mistaken Identity…
However, as dreamy as this star-studded union would have been, upon closer inspection, it became evident that the serene beauty beside the “Matrix” star was in fact, Los-Angeles-based artist Alexandra Grant, 46. Despite the nearly thirty-year age gap between Grant and Mirren, the resemblance is eerie. This bizarre case of mistaken identity has thrust Grant into the public focus, yet she appears cool, calm and collected throughout.
The Perfect Match?
Grants’ award cabinet might be somewhat lacking in shiny accolades in comparison to Mirren’s extensive collection, but this silver-haired lady is an accomplished artist and all-round interesting person. According to The Daily Mail, Grant is “kind, warm and spiritual” as well as a “great communicator.” She has “built Reeves’ trust” and embodies “qualities that most women [Reeves] has met in Hollywood don’t embrace.” Reeves has famously had a series of tragic misfortunes throughout his life, from the death of his ex-girlfriend Jennifer Syme in 2001 to the still-birth of his daughter, Ava, at 8 months gestation. It’s maybe no wonder that Reeves is attracted to this sophisticated, intelligent and mature woman.
From all accounts, Grant is an accomplished and talented artist. Her artwork is a fascinating marriage of “text and language in various media–painting, drawing, sculpture, film, and photography,” according to her website. She also frequently collaborates with other artists: authors, other artists, philosophers, and you guessed it, actors! Namely, the enigmatic Mr. Reeves, with whom she collaborated in as far back as 2011, with a picture book for adults named Ode to Happiness. This led to a second collaboration Shadows in 2016.
Grant Has An Impressive Global Audience For Her Art.
Grants art has been exhibited across the globe at an impressive range of famous locations, including but not limited to: the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), Galerie Gradiva in Paris and The Harris Lieberman Gallery in New York.
On top of her creative endeavors, Grant had a truly transient upbringing. She has an American mother and a Scottish father, who worked respectively in diplomacy and geology. Born in Ohio, her childhood was initially spent in Mexico City, in addition to France and Spain, after ultimately residing in the US. She graduated from Swarthmore College in 1994 with a degree in history and studio art. Grant is also a philanthropist–notably having created the grantLOVE project, which, according to her biography on WideWalls, “has helped raise funds for numerous arts-based non-profits including 18th Street Arts Center, Project Angel Food, Heart of Los Angeles (HOLA), LAXART, and Art of Elysium.”
‘She’s a lucky girl’
Despite being very successful in her own right, Alexandra Grant has been catapulted into a very different kind of limelight than she is probably accustomed to. However, she seems to share Reeves’s penchant for privacy and is a serious professional when it comes to her work. Mirren, speaking with her typical grace and humility, states it’s “very flattering on me, you know because she’s obviously lovely.” Very flattering also, because Grant is 30 years Mirren’s junior! Mirren also stated that she knows Keanu well and that “he is just the most adorable, lovely person,” according to CNN. “So she’s a lucky girl and I’m sure that he’s a lucky boy.”
If the rumors of coupledom are indeed true, it appears that Reeves and Grant have the Queen’s blessing!
