Star Wars is arguably one of the biggest pop culture franchises loved around the world. People of all backgrounds enjoy showing their love for George Lucas’ creation. One company showed how much Star Wars is for everyone with a heart-warming ad.
Pulling At The Heartstrings
With The Rise of Skywalker coming, Filipino phone company Globe Telecom perfectly dropped their new Christmas ad. The commercial begins with two boys looking around town to build a spaceship. With a slew of items, they work on their creation until it’s perfect. As expected, things don’t work out the first time around.
The two didn’t make a spaceship for their own enjoyment. They did it for their dear friend, who sees the final creation. As the little girl enters the ship, she’s suddenly in an immersive experience. The rocking spaceship came equipped with fans, water sprays, and flashing cell phones. The two boys made sure everything clicked at the right time with what was on the screen. Following the movie, the girl is revealed to be deaf. She gives her thanks to the young gentlemen through sign language. Globe Telecom created the ad to promote Virtualahan, which is a virtual school for people with disabilities.
Speaking My Language
The National Deaf Children’s Society dove into the Star Wars world with their 2016 campaign. “When the new Star Wars film came out, we had a campaign called Sign Language Awakens instead of The Force Awakens. Staff dressed as characters such as Princess Leia, Darth Vader, and Yoda, and taught people how to sign Star Wars characters and phrases,” NDCS head of digital engagement Helena Martins told Third Sector. This event was a big success, and it helped bring their audience closer to them. “It had a big engagement rate and helped us toward one of our digital goals, which is to not only broadcast at our audience but also to have conversations with them,” Martins also told Third Sector.
Represented On The Big Screen
Star Wars has delivered characters with disabilities but only in small doses. One of their most prominent disabled characters is Darth Vader. As Anakin Skywalker, he loses an arm at the end of Attack of the Clones. Following the tragedy, he begins to dive deeper into the Dark Side. In Revenge of the Sith, things took a more significant turn as Skywalker gets dismembered by Obi-Wan Kenobi. Skywalker gets saved and transforms into Vader.
In Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Donnie Yen plays blind warrior Chirrut Îmwe. To get it right, the actor wore white contacts, which made it hard to see his co-stars. “That was difficult, a lot more difficult than I expected. How do you find the confidence [to deliver] the character’s performance when you’re losing the security of being personal? And how do you interact with other actors?” Yen told People. Îmwe wasn’t written as a blind character, though. Yen made the suggestion after reading the script. “It’s very much consistent with the story of the film because when you can’t see, you have to feel things with your heart … Martial arts is also about feeling with one’s heart,” Yen told South China Morning Post.
Everyone Is Welcome
With their ad, Globe Telecom showed how difficult it could be viewing something like Star Wars. With so much action, you want to hear every lightsaber clash and TIE fighter present. Movie theaters across the country have been alleviating the situation with closed captioning. Despite the efforts, many deaf people wait until the digital release to continue the saga. This doesn’t deter people’s love for the iconic franchise. As long as stories are told, they’ll have their own way to enjoy them.
