30 Free Things to Do In New York City

Published

on

Whether you refer to it as NYC, Manhattan, The Big Apple, or the City That Never Sleeps, New York City is one of the best cities in the entire world. It’s one of a kind, unlike any other, and it’s a gigantic melting pot of people, cultures, languages, food, and things to do. Most of the time people just assume that it’s incredibly expensive to spend any time in this beloved city – and generally they’re spot on with that reaction. But I’m here to let you in on the secret that there are plenty of free things to do in this incredible city that will entertain you during your stay!

  • Brooklyn Brewery: 1-5pm Saturday, 1-4pm Sunday. 79 N 11th St, Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
  • On Wednesday the Bronx Zoo has a “pay what you wish” price. You should donate, but I guess technically you can go in for free. 2300 Southern Blvd, The Bronx.
  • Brooklyn Botanical Gardens is free on Tuesdays, and 10-12 on Saturdays.
  • Go to Central Park, one of the best parks in the world. There’s so much to do in this huge park, and it’s absolutely gorgeous!
  • Take a tour of Grand Central Station. 120 Park Ave, at 42nd St, Midtown East.

  • Visit the New York Public Library. You’ll be blown away.  Fifth Ave at 42nd St, Midtown East.
  • Take the Staten Island Ferry. Not necessarily for the trip to Staten Island (unless you actually wanna do that), but it’s more the experience. You’ll get to see the Statue of Liberty, and it’s all free!
  • New York Earth Room 141 Wooster St, SoHo.
  • Visit City Hall. City Hall Park, facing the Brooklyn Bridge, Lower Manhattan.
  • Former President of the United States, Ulyssess S. Grant’s Memorial, also known as Grant’s Tomb. Riverside Dr at 122nd St, Morningside Heights.
  • Window shopping in Time Square – being there alone is an experience. There’s no need to spend money.
  • FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) Museum. Or take a tour of the campus! Seventh Ave & 27th St, Garment District, Midtown West.
  • Take the ferry to Governors Island.
  • Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge.
  • Take a tour of any of the many colleges in the city, including NYU, FIT, any of the CUNY schools, and more.

  • Go to a free concert during the summer put on by Good Morning America.
  • Visit the Bronx Museum of the Arts.
  • Go to the Brooklyn Bridge park if you’re already passing over the bridge.
  • Walk around St. Patrick’s Cathedral, as long as mass isn’t in session.
  • Walk around the Coney Island board walk. No need to spend money on rides and food.

  • Walk the Highline, which is an abandoned railroad track.
  • Take the red tram to Roosevelt Island.
  • Walk around Rockefeller Center.
  • Visit Washington Square Park.
  • Socrates Sculpture Park.

  • Wander around China Town.
  • Go to the South Street Seaport. Lots of fun things to do, a mall, boats, water front, places to walk, trails, and sometimes there are live performances that are usually free.
  • Get free tickets to a live show taping to shows like The Daily Show, The Nightly Show, Rachael Ray, The Chew, and much more!
  • Depending on the time, parades are always free!
  • Staten Island Zoo is free after 2PM on Wednesdays.
