Ghosts – deep down, we’re all scared of them. When it becomes dark and you’re alone, you’ll start to feel goosebumps on your skin and hear and feel presences around you. Despite every rational thought, you can’t help but become startled and jumpy at every tiny sound you come across. Who knows, maybe those occasional spooks are nothing. But, maybe you’re living in a haunted house!

Many people will move into a house and later realize that it’s haunted. These types of paranormal occurrences are often the inspiration for movies like The Exorcist, The Amityville Horror, and Paranormal Activity. These houses are located all around the world, in every place imaginable. You may have heard of some of the houses on this list, and you’ll probably want to stay far away! 25. Drumbeg Manor

The Drumbeg Manor is located in the small town of Inver, Donegal County, Ireland, and is supposed to be one of the most haunted places in Europe!

Many strange events are reported to have taken place there, such as apparitions, including a screaming woman that can be heard on the grounds and a man in a white suit walking the halls. Spooky!

24. Winchester Mystery House

This spooky, albeit colorful, house is located on South Winchester Blvd. in San Jose, California. The mansion is huge – it’s hard to miss it – and was once the personal residence of Sarah Winchester.

Winchester was the widow of the once famed gun tycoon William Winchester. The house is an architectural curiosity, and it has been claimed time and time again that it is haunted by the ghosts of those that have been killed with Winchester rifles. Lovely, isn’t it?

23. Monte Cristo Homestead

The Monte Cristo Homestead was constructed way back in 1885 in Junee, New South Wales, Australia.

This historic late Victorian manor saw 7 deaths in the 1800’s, and is reportedly the most haunted house in the entirety of Australia! Ghost sightings are reported regularly, though the house is currently serving as a museum and antiques store.

22. McPike Mansion

Henry Guest McPike built the McPike Mansion (hence the name) in 1869 in Alton, St. Louis in Illinois. This is one of the most haunted houses in the United States, and has even appeared in Scariest Places on Earth.

The current owners of the house are Sharyn and George Luedke, who bought the house in an auction in 1994. Supposedly, the house is haunted the former owner’s ghost, along with one of his servants.

21. Whaley House

The Whaley House is situated in this lovely Greek Revival village in San Diego, California. This house is supposed to be so haunted, that LIFE magazine called it “the most haunted house in America!”

The main specter of the house is supposed to be James “Yankee Jim” Robinson, who was hanged on the property. Heavy footsteps can be heard around the house which are supposed to belong to him! Furthermore, visitors have thought to have seen apparitions of Thomas and Anna Whaley, the original owners of the house.

20. House of Laments

This historic House of Laments is located in Guanajuato, Mexico, and is quite famous for the events that took place in it.

In the 1890s, the house became the location of the infamous Tadeo Fulgencío Mejía murders. The serial killer responsible for these murders thought that by remaining so close to death, he could come in contact with his deceased wife. Nowadays, the locals say that they can hear the cries of the victims in the house!

This building, located in Finland, is supposed to be one of the most haunted buildings of the country! The Villa Kleineh, an Empire style villa, is located in Finland’s capital, Helsinki. The villa is supposed to be haunted by the ghost of Maria Kleineh, Kleineh’s second wife. She roams the house and is known as the White Lady!

18. Borley Rectory

The Borley Rectory was once called “the most haunted house in England,” and for good reason!

Built in 1862, the Gothic style mansion was built to house the rector and family of Borley parish in Essex County, England. The house has supposedly been haunted since it was built, and many paranormal activities have been reported. In 1993, over a hundred years after having been built, a fire badly damaged the house. 5 years later, it was demolished! Good riddance.

This old casino building in Bucharest, Romania is one of the scariest places around, so beware!

Rumor has it that in the past hundred years, several roulette players have committed suicide inside the building after losing their entire fortunes while gambling. There have been reports of at least 3 ghosts residing in the building, shaking furniture, causing wacky air currents, and often appearing themselves. There is also a strong sulfur odor that permeates the backyard. Scary!

16. Erasmus Mansion

The Erasmus Mansion has several names, including “Die Spookhuis” and “The Haunted House.”

The huge manor, located in Pretoria, South Africa, is known to be a supernatural hot-spot, with ghost sightings being a common occurrence. If you want to visit the Mansion, you’re in luck! It is now open for public tours and other special occasions. Among the paranormal happenings are lit windows in unused sections of the manor and in-explainable noises!

15. Sallie House

This house, located in Atchison, Kansas, has had a terrible past, leading to an incredible paranormal hot-spot.

Full-bodied apparitions are a common occurrence in the Sallie House, and objects will often fly around of their own volition! Occupants of the house often hear furniture moving, animalistic noises, and disembodied voices speaking and shouting. Some will even sustain physical harm, including cuts, burns, and scratches.

14. Stewards House

Another old and terrifying house is the Stewards House, which is located on Montpelier Hill near Dublin, Ireland.

It was built in 1765, and has supposedly been haunted since then! There are several specters in the house, including a large black cat with glowing red eyes. Poltergeist activity is common here, so watch out for the sound of ringing bells! In the 1990s, the house was turned into a restaurant, but it closed in 2001. The house is currently a private residence! Would you live there?

13. Riddle House

The Riddle House, located in Palm Beach County, Florida, was originally built as a funeral parlor. That simply can’t end well, right?

It didn’t take long for the house to become privately owned by the city manager, Karl Riddle, after for which it gets its name. In 1995, the house was dismantled and moved to a different location in South Florida, in Yesteryear Village. During the move, the workers reported tons of paranormal activity!

Located in Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia, the house has a serious reputation for being majorly haunted. Tons of ghost sightings have been reported in the house, such as a Dutch lady and several headless ghouls. Several ghost hunters have investigated the area and even caught them on camera

11. Moore House

This house has a notorious reputation due to the infamous Villisca Axe Murders.

The crimes took place in 1912 in a small town southwest of Des Moines, Iowa. In the murders, 8 people were massacred by an axe: 6 members of the Moore family and two guests of the family. Ever since these gruesome murders took place, the house has been terribly haunted. Residents of the house can hear children crying, and even see the murderer himself walking around the grounds with an axe.

10. Springhill House

This 17th century plantation house located in Ballindrum County, Londonderry is the spot where the plantation master, George Lenox-Conyngham, committed suicide in 1816.

Ever since then, this Northern Ireland plantation sees some of the most ghost sightings in the country! Among the most reported is a tall lady dressed in black, who many believe to be George Lenox-Conyngham’s widow, Olivia.

9. DeFoe House

This New York house, located in Amityville, Suffolk County, saw a terrible and terrifying mass murder.

In 1974, Ronald DeFoe Jr., an inhabitant of the house, killed both of his parents and his two brothers and two sisters, all in the same night. Then, one year later, the Lutz family moved into the house, despite its terrifying history. In the 28 short days that they were there, they claimed to be terrorized by several types of paranormal phenomena.

It is rumored to be haunted, and is even the location where the most famous ghost picture in history was shot! The legendary Brown Lady is the ghost of Lady Dorothy Walpole, who was trapped in the house and perished in 1726. Her form was once photographed descending the staircase, in a miraculous piece of ghost-hunting evidence!

7. Chaonei No. 81

This French baroque brick structure, also known as Chaonei Church, is located in Beijing, China.

The house is very well-known, especially for being haunted! Many ghosts can be seen inside, including a suicidal woman. In 2014, a popular horror film, The House That Never Dies, was even set there!

6. Joshua Ward House

This house, built in 1784, is one of the oldest brick houses in Salem, Massachusetts.

This house was one of the epicenters of the infamous Salem witch trials, and is one of the spots where women convicted of being witches would be hung or burned. It is now rumored to be haunted, and for good reason, too!

5. Quinta da Juncosa

Home to the Baron of Lages and his family, this farmhouse has seen an awful murder.

According to legend, the Baron was so jealous that he would constantly accuse his wife of cheating on him, enough that he eventually tied her to a horse and dragged her around until she was dead. When he found out that she was actually innocent, he felt so guilty that he killed their children and then committed suicide. He now haunts the farmhouse!

4. Lalaurie Mansion

The Lalaurie mansion is located on Royal Street in New Orleans, Louisiana and is a gigantic 3-story house.

It once belonged to Delphine Lalaurie, a creole socialite… and alleged serial killer. She became infamous for torturing and murdering her household slaves, and those slaves are still supposed to be haunting the mansion!

3. Fuhlingen House

This house was once the beautiful residence of Eduard Freiherr von Oppenheim, a highly prominent German banker. Now, it is known to be one of the most haunted residences in Germany!

It is believed to be haunted by several ghosts, one of which is a worker looking for his love, and the other which is a judge that hung himself inside the house. Creepy!

2. Torre de Cossio House

This giant colonial mansion is located right in the heart of Mexico City, Mexico.

In the 1630s, the house was home to the serial killer Juan Manuel de Solórzano. His crimes were motivated due to the belief that his wife was unfaithful. He killed several men he thought were involved – he would stop them outside his mansion and stab them if they seemed anxious to see him. Rumor has it that he still wanders around the outside of his mansion to this day!

This historic house was built in Benton Park, St. Louis, Missouri in 1868, and is definitely not a place you want to live in.

It is the home of several mysterious murders and tragedies, including 4 suicides of Lemp family members, and the death of one of the Lemp sons. The Lemp family is still said to haunt the house and can be seen and heard around the area. Spooky!
