2019 Will Be Packed With These Great Female-Directed Films

From Kathryn Bigelow to Patty Jenkins, female film directors have brought us some astonishing tales. Things won’t be any different in 2019 with a slew of films ready to dominate the box office. We take a look at five great movies directed by amazing female directors coming your way soon.

Charlie’s Angels

Actress Elizabeth Banks takes over the director’s chair for the Charlie’s Angels reboot. The film features Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska as the new detectives in town. Banks will also star in the film as one of three characters named Bosley. The movie will hit theaters on November 1.

Little Women

Following 2017’s acclaimed Lady Bird, director Greta Gerwig will bring the beloved Little Women novel to life. The film finds her reuniting with Lady Bird stars Saoirse Ronan and Timothée Chalamet. Unlike previous adaptations of the novel, Gerwig’s version focuses on themes via time jumps. The movie will be released on Christmas Day.

Booksmart

Actress Olivia Wilde has earned praise for her directorial debut in Booksmart. The movie follows two high school students going on a wild night before their graduation. It currently holds a 100% approval rating over on Rotten Tomatoes following its SXSW debut. Booksmart will be released nationwide on May 24.

Little

Directed by Tina Gordon Chism, Little finds tech mogul Jordan Sanders transforming into her younger self. The film’s inspiration came from 14-year-old Marsai Martin, who plays 13-year-old Sanders. Martin saw the movie Big and pitched Little to producer Kenya Barris. Martin becomes the youngest person with an executive producer title in a major Hollywood film. Little arrives on April 12.

The Kitchen

For Andrea Berloff’s directorial debut, The Kitchentells the tale of three women taking over the mafia. Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish, and Elisabeth Moss will shine in their starring roles. This is one of few female-directed films based on a comic book series. The Kitchen was originally released on Vertigo Comics back in 2014. The film will hit theaters on August 9th.
