The phrase “there’s a first time for everything” is prevalent to Oscar season. The Oscars are always a “who’s who” of the year’s finest films. Yearly, the Oscars find itself rewriting history in front of film fanatics. Here are several ways this year’s Oscars is making history through its nominations.

A Long Time Coming

While Spike Lee earned two Oscar nominations in the past, they weren’t for the big awards. BlacKkKlansman gave the iconic director his first ever Oscar nominations for Best Director and Best Picture. “I do think that many years from now when historians go to a piece of art that reflected what’s going on now, they’re going to look at this film as on the right side of history,” he told Indiewire.

Trio Of Talent

The Favourite is the first film in seven years to have three female leads with nominees. Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz are competing for Best Supporting Actress while Olivia Colman goes for Best Actress. The comedy showcases the battle for the heart of Queen Anne during the War of the Spanish Succession.

An Unforgettable Debut

It’s hard to believe that 25-year-old Yalitza Aparicio’s acting debut is in Roma. For her remarkable performance, she gained a Best Actress nomination. She becomes the first indigenous actress to earn this nomination. She also becomes the first Latina to gain this nomination since Catalina Sandino Moreno back in 2005.

When it comes to superhero films, most of them get overlooked by the Academy. They’ll often get nominations for special effects and makeup, but they won’t get anything bigger. The closest film to reach the top was The Dark Knight, which earned a Best Supporting Actor win. Black Panther earns the title of first superhero movie to have a Best Picture nomination.

For her performance, Lady Gaga becomes the third Best Actress nominee throughout all four versions.
