2018 Movies Already On The Academy Awards Radar

Published

on

It’s the start of another awards season. 2018 offered a wide array of Oscar-worthy films, including prestigious performances by Lady Gaga (A Star is Born), Emily Blunt (Mary Poppins Returns), Oliva Coleman in The Favourite and other impressive films. But if the Oscars were held tomorrow, here’s our list of the top contenders. And the Oscar goes to…

Green Book

Peter Farrelly’s 1960s-set film Green Book is a big contender for the 2019 Oscars. A story about a classical pianist (Mahershala Ali) and his driver (Viggo Mortensen) has already captivated audiences for its writing, directing (by Farrelly), and overall originality. Be sure to look for this film, Ali and Mortensen’s performances, and Farrelly’s directing to be featured at the 2019 awards.

If Beale Street Could Talk

Adapted from James Baldwin’s beloved 1974 novel, If Beale Street Could Talk is one of those films that screams, “I’m Oscar-worthy.” Moonlight director Barry Jenkins offers another impressive film about people of color. With a stellar cast, including Regina King, be sure to look for this film, King’s performance, and Jenkins’ directing to be nominated for the 2019 Oscars.

Mary Poppins Returns

Emily Blunt had a good year, with high expectations of being nominated for her chilling performance in A Quiet Place, and now in the musical event of the year, Mary Poppins Returns. The film has won viewers’ hearts, especially those who loved the original 1964 Disney classic. The sequel will definitely be awarded at this year’s Oscars.

Bohemian Rhapsody

Bohemian Rhapsody was one of the most discussed (and critically praised) films of 2018. The film inspired new generations to fall in love with Queen’s music. Not only was Rami Malek’s performance as Freddie Mercury impressive enough for him to be nominated, but Bryan Singer’s directing of the Queen biopic is sure to be widely celebrated during this year’s awards season.

A Star Is Born

No one expected A Star Is Born to be a powerful film in 2018, but that’s exactly what happened. First-time director Bradley Cooper could be nominated for both his directing and his performance in the film, along with his leading lady, Lady Gaga. The film connected with fans of all ages, and that’s enough for it to be the biggest contender for the 2019 Academy Awards.
