The Recording Academy released the nominees for next year’s 59th Annual Grammy Awards that will be aired live on February 12, 2017. Beyonce leads the nods with an impressive nine nominations which include Song of the Year, Record of the Year and Album of the Year. She has one common competitor in those big categories, Adele, who bagged five nominations.

As usual, the 2017 Grammy nominees had a few surprises in store, and some very unlikely snubs. Here’s our pick of the most shocking ones.

The Snubs:

1. The late David Bowie received four nominations but none of them included Album of the Year. The late British artist released his 25th studio album ‘Blackstar’ at the beginning of the year that was well received before and after his death. Though Bowie fell short of the big nods, his first-ever Grammy nominations include Best Rock Performance and Best Alternative Album.

2. Alessia Cara has had quite a year, making a home for herself on the Top 40 with songs like ‘Here’ and ‘Scars to Your Beautiful’. While many were surprised that she didn’t bag a nomination for Best New Artist, the real shocker was that she didn’t receive even a single nod!

3. Though Rihanna’s ‘Work’, ‘Needed Me’ and ‘Kiss it Better’ are up for a couple of Grammys next year, her hit Album ‘Anti’ is only up for Best Recording Package and Best Urban Contemporary Album. Many predicted ‘Anti’ to steal a nod in the Album of the Year category but sadly for Riri and her fans, that wasn’t the case.

4. Drake’s ‘One Dance’ made waves around the world this summer, becoming one of the rapper’s biggest hits; however, the song surprisingly got snubbed in categories where lesser known hip-hop songs stole a nod. This includes Record of the Year but Drake will still be happy with his all nominations including his first-ever Album of the Year nod.

The Surprises:

1. The biggest shocker of all is Sturgill Simpson’s Album of the Year nomination for ‘A Sailor’s Guide to Earth’. Though the release debuted in Billboard 200’s top 10, it did not go on to become a major blockbuster which is why the nod has shocked many.

2. Mike Posner’s incredible comeback to the music scene was surprising enough, but no one could imagine he would get nominated for Song of the Year at the 2017 Grammy Awards. Especially because it was a remix of the song ‘I Took a Pill in Ibiza’ that made waves worldwide.

3. Beyonce is no stranger to the Grammy Awards; and while a few may have been surprised by her nine nominations, the biggest surprise was to find her in a rock category! Her ‘Don’t Hurt Yourself’ from the album ‘Lemonade’ is up for Best Rock Performance.
