Are These Officially the World’s Ugliest Dogs? Take a Look
Every year, the World’s Ugliest Dog Contest takes place at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, CA. The contest’s aim is to show that even the less-than-cute or strange looking dogs still deserve to be loved as much as all the rest. They describe this contest as one for dogs that are more beautiful on the inside rather than outside. It is a time for abnormal dogs to shine, so take a look at some of these adorably ugly pooches that are so full of love no matter how they look.
Here is a dog that will make you look twice! Sweepee Rambo was the winner of the World’s Ugliest Dog Contest in 2016, taking home the grande $1,500 prize. She finally won after four tries! She may look like a dog but her official bio describes her as a “ride or die chick.”
She is a 17-year-old Chinese-crested Chihuahua and rides to work daily with owner Jason Wurtz. He rescued her from a pound and while Sweepee Rambo was originally a gift for his wife, he ended up keeping her after they divorced since the wife didn’t like her.
This pup has certainly earned his nickname as he resembles Quasimodo from “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” but he certainly wasn’t locked away in a church for no one to see. In fact, he’s quite the love bug and is totally affectionate.
When Quasi Modo entered the contest in 2015, the pit bull-Dutch Shepherd mix was 10 years old and his biography read “My appearance can be a little unsettling to some (I have had grown men jump on top of their cars to get away from me because they thought I was a hyena or Tasmanian devil) but once they get to know me I win them over with my bubbly personality.” Guess the judges didn’t mind his imperfection because Quasi Modo was crowned the winner.
The 2013 World’s Ugliest Dog winner was a four-year-old beagle, basset hound, and boxer breed mix who waddles like a duck and has an oversized head.
Walle’s owner, Tammie Barbee, didn’t enter him because of his facial features but rather because of his disproportionate body. She told reporters that people ask her all the time what’s wrong with him. The judge Brian Sobel said, “This dog looked like he’s been Photoshopped with pieces from various dogs and maybe a few other animals.” Walle is definitely unusual looking.
Rest in peace the 2011 winner, who died just eight months after he won the ugliest dog crown. At least he went out on top and seems to have lived a great life in spite of his unusual appearance. Yoda was 14-years-old when he brought home the trophy and it was his first time entering the Sonoma-Marin Fair’s contest.
This 1.8-pound teacup Chihuahua-and-Chinese-Crested dog (although, nobody is 100% sure of the breed) managed to wow the judges with his style. Yoda’s owner Terry Schumacher said that she adopted him after her four-year-old daughter found him abandoned in a field.
Peanut’s owner had a good reason for entering her in the so-called ugly dog into the contest—She wanted to raise awareness of animal abuse. Believe it or not, poor little Peanut was a victim of abuse and survived a series of burns.
Holly Chandler of Greenville, North Carolina explained that when Peanut was a puppy, he was badly burned, which gave him numerous bald spots and said, “We’re trying to use him as a poster child for what can happen to animals who are abused.” Chandler used Peanut’s $1,500 prize to pay for other animals’ veterinary bills.
Sometimes you don’t even want to hide the fact that your dog isn’t attractive and get it out of the way by naming your dog Mugly as Bev Nicholson did. Even though he may be Mugly, one thing is sure: he is a pampered little pooch!
The eight-year-old Chinese Crested dog already had a reputation as one of the U.K.’s ugliest dog honorees before he entered the California contest. Mugly made sure, though, to boast his homeland by wearing Union Jack embellished accessories while Nicholson did as well. It definitely helped win the judges over.
Her name may be Princess but she looks more like the ugly step sister. Despite how it looks, Princess Abby is not bowing in the photo but rather, her hind legs are taller than her front legs. She was born with a true royal grace.
The cause of her uneven leg length, arched back, and blindness in the left eye is most likely due to inbreeding, which is why you should spay and neuter your pets. The four-year-old dog was rescued by Kathleen Francis after her vet found Princess Abby abandoned in the streets. Francis doesn’t think her dog is ugly as she told reporters, “I think she’s the most beautiful dog.”
It may look like this Chinese Crested doggo is winking at you but Gus only has one eye and while on that note, he also is missing a leg. Sadly, he passed away from cancer just months after winning the 2008 title.
Gus’ owner Jeanenne Teed actually entered the contest in hopes that her dog would win and she could use the prize money for her pal’s chemotherapy. He was nine-years-old when he won the contest and his sad story helped woo over the audience and judges.
This Chinese Crested dog became so popular after he won the 2007 World’s Ugliest Dog Contest that he was made into a children’s book titled “Everyone Loves Elwood.”
Elwood’s original breeder wanted to put the pup down because he was too ugly and no one wanted him. Karen Quigley fell in love with him when the two were introduced and saved his life. Her friends were the ones that suggested she enter Elwood into the contest and she did, although Quigley doesn’t think her dog is ugly at all.
It is hard to look at this dog and not crack a smile. Pabst’s most notable feature is his very visible underbite but his owner Miles Egstad said, “I don’t think he’s that ugly!” All that matters is his great demeanor.
In 2009, Pabst became the first non-Chinese Crested to win the title in more than seven years and it is because the audience fell in love with his funny but cute face. Egstad said she named him after Pabst Blue Ribbon beer because of his “bitter beer face” and it seems very fitting. PBR, do you need a new mascot?
It’s probably his tongue that won him the contest because Archie can’t seem to keep it in his mouth. It’s not his fault, though, because little Archie simply doesn’t have any teeth. Furthemore, he hardly has any hair, but totally manages to rock the sparse tufts atop his head anyway.
If it wasn’t for Archie’s owner Heather Peoples, he would have been put to death because he was too ugly. But fortunately, Peoples saw past that. The 2006 contest had a scandal when someone hacked the votes, deleting thousands, but after it was solved, Archie was crowned the winner.
The Chinese Crested dog, Spam-O-Rama, may have lost to Pabst in the 2009 contest but he was still memorable for his very white hair. In fact, his beautiful white mane almost looks like a wig. This dog’s features are all natural, though.
Spam-O-Rama’s owner Lydon Olivares started entering her dog into the contest when the pooch was six years old and kept coming back every year in hopes that her pup would win. People seemed to love his awesome name as well.
This Chihuahua named Andre Peterson entered the 2015 contest but lost to Quasi Modo. Still, who could forget this little dog with the oversized tongue always hanging out? According to his bio, he loves to “eat, sleep and play” with his “family and Frank and Lucky.”
Andre was one of the older contestants at the age of seven but managed to keep up with the younger pups. Owner Janine Peterson certainly got a lot of attention for this extraordinarily-friendly dog, who kept getting pet by lots of people.
Pee Wee Martini
Kristin Maszkiewicz brought her Japanese Crested dog named Pee Wee Martini all the way from Chicago, Ill. to California in order to compete in the 2007 contest. Despite his exotic look, many people thought his “ugly” dog’s face was actually rather cute.
Maszkiewicz rescued Pee Wee Martini from an animal rescue organization but when she first got him, he wasn’t as ugly. His face and body didn’t change until later but she still loved him regardless. She decided to enter him into the contest after many people kept pointing out how unattractive and scary looking he is.
This Pomeranian pooch named Mayzie Brown participated in the 25th annual World’s Ugliest Dog contest in 2013, thanks to her loving owner Kadie Steacy of Nevada. Although she was a close runner-up, she lost out that year to fellow competitor Walle.
While Pomeranians are usually considered to be cute dogs, Mayzie Brown was different with her bald patches of pink, speckled skin. That is why her owner decided she was worthy of the contest and the dog was one of the top finishers that year.
This scary looking Chinese Crested dog named Sam has won not once but three times in a row, starting in 2003. Sadly, Sam died in 2005 after being crowned king for a third time and he was sorely missed in the 2006 contest.
Susie Lockheed rescued the hairless, toothless, blind dog from a shelter near her home in Santa Barbara and after she entered Sam into the contest, he gained international fame just for being hideous. In 2005, Sam was a star on Mindfreak Halloween Special and he has also been on Japanese TV, New Zealand radio and featured in the Daily Telegraph newspaper in England.
If you thought Sam achieved a lot of notoriety, Dane Andrew’s Chinese Crest dog named Rascal puts him in his place. The pup is in the Guinness Book of World Records for most ugly dog titles, with a total of eight.
Besides the Sonoma-Marin Fair contest, Rascal has been in other ugly dog contests and when he won the World’s Oldest Ugly Dog Contest in Fort Bragg, California, he became the only dog to win both top titles. Rascal was invited onto Jay Leno’s The Tonight Show and has appeared in four horror movies.
Andrea Potts must have been a big Lucille Ball fan as she named her Chinese Crested pup after the famous actress. Though both figures are known for their famous manes, this dog’s name was adapted to reflect her balding face and body.
Lucielle Bald from Florida traveled all the way to California to compete and ended up winning the 2006 contest. She is bald all over except for her head, tail, and feet, giving her a striking appearance. Her owner, Michelle, described her as a very shy dog who slowly overcame her anxiety.
It seems that if you want your dog to win a prize for ugliest dog, a good feature it to have have is an uncontrollable tongue that always is hanging out. Another plus is a scraggly mane to speckle a bald little body. Boolah here, perfectly exemplifies all that.
The Chinese Crested dog Boolah is one of those dogs that can’t keep his tongue under control and it seems as though he can’t control his bladder either as he was seen sporting a diaper. Boolah was also 17-years-old when he entered the 2016 contest.
Yvonne Swanger from Santa Rosa, California was proud to enter her dog Scamp into the 2015 California contest and people loved his wild, unruly hair style. He has a wild mane, but it turns out that he is as sweet and loving as can be.
Scamp was rescued from a shelter in Los Angeles and Swanger didn’t care about his untamed hair. He became a therapy dog and regularly visits senior centers. He also visits local first graders as a “reading dog.” This pup seems to use his fame for good.
You probably would not expect you would see a pug on this list considering they are usually cute-looking dogs. Penny, however, has quite a different look. She seems a bit off, with her droopy little tongue hanging down the side of her face.
The 12-year-old purebred pug was entered into the 2013 contestant by her owner James Montgomery but didn’t win that year. She was still a memorable face among the crowd because you don’t see very many pugs in this competition. Better luck next time!
Although Isaboo didn’t win the prize for ugliest dog in the 2013 World’s Ugliest Dog Contest, he managed to take home a solid third-place prize in the Mutt category. At seven years old, this odd-looking dog was memorable for his striking blonde and red Mohawk hairdo.
Isaboo is from Payette, Idaho and has been a contestant for a couple of years but only won a prize in the 2013 competition. His real name is actually Himisaboo and he is a Dachshund-Chinese-Crested mix, who came to be after the Dachshund-owning Heather Wilson married someone with a Chinese Crested.
Considering his name means white in Spanish, his owner Miriam Goldie had expected that little Blanco would eventually turn out to sport white hair all over his brown body as he grew older. This didn’t quite happen as planned, but Blanco still manages to live up to his name.
Blanco didn’t win the competition but he couldn’t care less. He was all smiles when reporters took his photo. Goldie doesn’t think he is ugly but entered him in the contest anyway just for fun and it seems like both did have some laughs.
Pork was another dog beaten by Quasi Modo during the 2015 World’s Ugliest Dog contest but it could have been because his posh blue nails and matching collar were too fashionable for the discerning judges. By the looks of it, he’s an especially pampered little thing.
The 13-year-old Chihuahua is owned by Monica Huerta from Petaluma, California, who wanted to give Pork a boost of confidence by painting his nails blue. He is actually really shy which is why the 2015 competition was his first but he did well.
Owner Jon Adler didn’t see any reason wrong with affectionately naming his Chinese Crested dog Icky after his funny looks. He was therefore a shoo-in when he was entered in the Sonoma-Marin Fair contest in 2015. Still, there is nothing icky about this bald little gentleman.
Despite the fact that Icky looks older, he was only six-years-old when Adler took him to the California competition. He told reporters that he rescued the Chinese Crested from a “hoarding situation” and they have been close pals ever since, as you can see.
Josie from Tuscan, Arizona certainly is quite a sight with her big mane of white, that seems to go in every direction on her otherwise tiny bald body. Although she is happy and well-loved now, with her adorable tongue hanging out freely, her life was not always so easy.
Before Josie was rescued, she lived a hard life as she spent years living in a cage at a puppy mill and did not get very much attention. Luckily, someone adopted her and now, she has a great life in Tucson, Arizona. Josie even has a “job” helping other foster pets adjust to life after being rescued.
Zoomer is an eight-year-old Chinese Crested dog from Davis, California who participated in the most recent 2017 contest. Despite his wild ‘do, he lost out to the winning Neapolitan Mastiff, Martha. Good he didn’t win, actually, because some think he is a thing of beauty.
Zoomer’s owner Vicky Adler doesn’t think her dog is ugly and actually refers to him as her sexy boy. The Chinese Crested dog was saved by the organization S.A.F.E. (Saving Animals from Euthanasia) after he was supposed to be put down since no one wanted him. Then, Adler adopted him and gave Zoomer a loving home.
This dog entered the World’s Ugliest Dog Contest with a name like Handsome Hector but Ghada Marta wanted to poke fun at her not-so-handsome looking purebred Chinese Crested gentleman of a dog. He may have a silly little face but he has a big heart too.
Handsome Hector lives in San Rafael, California but was born in Sacramento with, according to his bio, the heart of a junkyard dog. He managed to win for his division in the 2011 contest but not the grand prize. The previous year, he did come in second place.
Chihuahua’s are commonly referred to as rats for their small bodies and skinny faces and Ratdog’s owner decided to affectionately name the dog just that. This Ratdog, however, seems to be more of a party animal, actually, and is well loved much more than a typical rat.
When Ratdog entered the 2011 contest, he was 14-years-old but didn’t look that old. The Chihuahua was a deaf rescue mutt and, according to his bio, he likes to put onions, garlic, and anchovies on pizza, so he might have also had bad breath too.
Miss Ellie won first place in the 2009 Pedigree class part of the contest and gained a lot of attention as many people loved her kind spirit and spritely face perfectly framed by a spray of fluff and a perfect droopy tongue.
The pedigree prize is actually the most sought-after prize at the contest and this 15-year-old Chinese Crested Hairless dog managed to win it. Miss Ellie sadly didn’t make it to the 2010 competition as she passed away in June 2010 at the age of 17.
Victoria is an odd-looking Italian Greyhound lady dog from Southern California who has won the San Diego Ugliest Dog Contest two years in a row. She should also win a prize for “miracle dog” too, considering she survived many odds.
Victoria’s owner sees the strength in her dog and rescued the little thing right before she was put to sleep. Her owner, Bruna Palmateier, says it is a miracle Victoria has lived so long considering the dog has had a lot of medical problems after she was rescued. She is blind in one eye, has a deformed face with crooked teeth, a gimpy leg, and no longer has a tail. What a trooper.
When Morris entered the 2015 World’s Ugliest Dog Competition in Petaluma, California, he was four-years-old and competed against 27 other dogs for the title. His favorite activities include “hugging people, licking, and chewing people’s noses and ears.”
Morris is actually a resident of Petaluma and he was rescued by Rona Thau from “Barkingham” Palace in West Hollywood. When describing her dog, Thau said his favorite things were “hugging people, licking, and chewing people’s noses and ears.” Let’s hope he didn’t bite the judges’ noses and ears too.
Chuy’s full name is actually Prince Chuburto Jesus Kowell but Chuy is a lot easier to say, especially when in a competition against a slew of other pups vying for a title. All names aside, this curious pup stands out no matter what.
Chuy competed in the 2015 contest and was memorable for his overbite smile and matted hair that went in a lot of different directions. He is a hairless mix rescue dog from Tennessee and works as a helper to those with disabilities. Chuy has a tendency to smell fishy since he eats salmon oil with every meal.
Moe competed in the 2017 contest but only managed to place second behind Martha. Yet with that tongue, it looks like he is making fun of all those who didn’t place at all. Miriam Tcheng owns this 16-year-old fizzy-haired Brussels Griffon-pug mix.
He turned out to be the oldest contestant. Due to old age, Moe lost both his sight and hearing but developed a strong sense of smell to compromise. He even ate some funnel cake and other fried foods at the competition.
This year’s World’s Ugliest Dog Contest winner went to one lucky dog named Martha, a huge Neapolitan Mastiff who wowed judges with her unique look and lifestyle. In fact, the 125-pound dog flopped on the stage when it was her turn and fell asleep, which definitely won her some extra points for cuteness.
Although Martha the Mastiff is only three years old, her wrinkly skin and long face definitely made her look quite a bit older. Her owner described Martha as a “drooling, snoring, gassy, loud and silly girl” but she loves her anyway.
