Many longtime actors often feel the need to transition into another role. Some do it to fulfill a lifelong dream while others do it to challenge themselves. One Oscar-nominated actor is set to take a huge step in his career.

Making The Switch

Since 1985, Viggo Mortensen has become one of Hollywood’s most beloved actors. During his career, he’s earned praise for his work on Lord of the Rings, Eastern Promises, and Captain Fantastic.

Universal Pictures

Now, the New York City native will make his way behind the camera and make his directorial debut.

Fall From Grace

His director debut will come in Falling, which is about a son’s strained relationship with his father. Aside from starring and directing in the film, Mortensen also wrote the film’s screenplay. So far, the cast includes Lance Henriksen (Aliens, Millennium) and Sverrir Gudnason (The Girl in the Spider’s Web).

Sony Pictures Classics

When it comes to distribution, HanWay Films will help send it overseas. When it comes to working with Mortensen, the company is happy with their new partnership. “The industry has always regarded Viggo as a really soulful artist. He is a talented photographer, poet, and musician. His screenplay for Falling is a powerful, well-observed family drama. We are thrilled to be part of his promising and exciting directorial debut,” stated HanWay Films’ Gabrielle Stewart.

Years Of Learning

In preparation to step behind the camera for the first time, Mortensen learned from the best. “I’ve had some great teachers over the years. I’ve been in more than one movie that most actors would be happy to just have that one in their career. I’ve been in many good stories and I’ve worked with great directors,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.

Rome Film Fest

Mortensen is currently busy working on Unabomb, which is about the horrendous actions of Ted Kaczynski. Filming on Falling will begin sometime next year.
