‘Twilight’ Celebrates 10 Years And It’s Still An Important Movie

Published

It’s been ten years since Twilight was released in theaters. The adaptation of the popular novel by Stephanie Meyer was an instant hit, inspiring four additional movies. Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke spoke about why Twilight was a huge success in 2008 and the franchise’s lasting impact on Hollywood blockbusters.

A Big-Name Franchise

Twilight is now regarded as one of the biggest franchises in film history. Compared to Harry Potter and Star Wars, Twilight has its own fanbase. People can’t get enough of the sparkly vampires, the love story between a human (Bella Swan) and vampire (Edward Cullen), and the supernatural world in Forks, Washington.

Twilight inspired an entire genre of vampires. But according to director Catherine Hardwicke, the movie franchise inspired more than just that.

A Risky Start

It’s true that Twilight inspired a genre of vampires. Once the film was released, everyone fell in love—quite literally—with vampires. But Hardwicke is the first to agree that no one involved in the film thought it would be a success.

“I don’t think anybody thought it was going to be that crazy,” Hardwicke said at a recent New York Comic Con. “I knew there was a passionate fanbase who had read the books, but we didn’t know that would translate.”

But there had to be a reason the film was so successful. Perhaps it was Hardwicke’s direction, the storyline, or the actors. But if you ask Hardwicke, it’s all about Bella Swan.

Female Empowerment

While the general plot in Twilight is fascinating and inspired millions of fans to love vampires for several years, this isn’t why the film franchise became a pop culture movement. According to Hardwicke, it’s because the story is about a teenage girl, Bella Swan, who isn’t very popular. She was relatable, and she fell in love with a vampire.

“A novel written by a woman, a movie directed by a female, we broke records,” Hardwicke said. “That’s a ground-breaking thing.”

To the Barricade

While the vampire franchise has been replaced by other fanbases in recent years, Twilight remains an important piece in cinematic history. Who can resist the timeless story of Bella and Edward?
