Tom Payne Dishes On ‘Walking Dead’ Departure

This season of The Walking Dead has been full of twists and turns. The biggest story came from lead actor Andrew Lincoln departing the series. Unfortunately, he wasn’t the only person to say goodbye to the hit AMC show.

A Surprising End

During season six, actor Tom Payne made his Walking Dead entrance as Paul “Jesus” Rovia. On the season nine episode “Evolution,” Jesus meets his maker at the hands of a Whisperer.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Payne says that it was time to move on. “They were aware I wouldn’t be unhappy if they got rid of me. I expressed unhappiness last season,” he said.

No Sense Of Development

His big reason for wanting to leave was how his character was portrayed. In the comic books, Jesus is one of the biggest players in the group. “In the comics, he has this massive fight with Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). He catches a grenade, and throws it back [at his enemies]. He’s the most capable member of the entire group! And he wasn’t used at all [on the show],” Payne said.

During the show, Jesus hasn’t done much outside of saving Heath and Glenn from a Savior. Fans have been vocal on social media about how the character has been used.

A Possible Comeback?

Following Andrew Lincoln‘s exit, it was announced that he’ll take part in a trio of Walking Dead movies. If there are other Walking Dead films in the works, Payne would love for Jesus to have a bigger story.

“I would only want to do it if it was good material. I don’t have any interest in being there in the background, or showing up just for the sake of doing it. I would love to tell a story about Jesus’ beginnings or whatever happened in those six years,” he said.
