Tom Hardy to Play Venom in ‘Spider-Man’ Spin-Off

Tom Hardy is set to star as the titular villain in “Venom.” Ruben Fleisher, best known for his work on “Zombieland”, will be directing Sony Pictures’ long-awaited Spider-Man spin-off. It marks Hardy’s second portrayal of a superhero villain, the first being as Bane in 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises.

Spider-Man: Homecoming”, which stars Tom Holland as a 15-year-old Peter Parker, hits theaters this July.  Sony seems to be expanding their portion of the Marvel cinematic universe rather quickly. The studio is also working on a Silver Sable and Black Cat project, along with other characters from Spider-Man’s universe.

Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinker are writing the “Venom” screenplay. The duo also worked together on the upcoming “Jumanji” remake, which stars Dwayne Johnson and is due out in December.

According to sources, Hardy is a big fan of the Venom, who made his comic book debut in The Amazing Spider-Man in 1988. Check out the t-shirt the actor is wearing in the picture that Sony tweeted to celebrate the announcement.

Hardy received an Oscar nomination for his supporting role in 2015’s The Revenant, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. He is currently the star of the BBC and FX series “Taboo”, and will appear in the World War II film Dunkirk later this summer. Topher Grace previously played Venom in 2007’s Spider-Man 3. His career has been arguably tainted since director Sam Raimi’s third and final “Spider-Man” film. So, hopefully Hardy fairs better with the much-anticipated production portraying the villain and somehow anti-hero.

Venom was originally created by Todd McFarlane, David Michelinie, and Mike Zeck. He has since become a fan favorite, particularly after appearing in “Spider-Man: The Animated Series”, where he was voiced by  Hank Azaria, best known for his starring role voicing “The Simpsons.
